About this resource

Free Valentine writing prompts for K-2 that give every writer a way in. Each prompt is one big picture with its word printed under it, a word bank with a picture beside every word, and ruled lines made for primary writers. Print it, hand it out, and the whole room writes about the same thing.

WHAT'S INSIDE (14 pages)

The Four Prompts

A Heart ("I give a heart to..."), My Letter ("My letter says..."), My Chocolate ("I like chocolate..."), My Teddy Bear ("My teddy bear likes...").

The Two Pages For Every Prompt

1. Finish It: the sentence starter printed in solid letters on the first rule. The student reads it and finishes the sentence with a word from the bank.

2. Write It: the picture and the word bank only. Six empty rules; the student writes from scratch.

How To Use It

Pick a prompt. Say the picture's name and the sentence out loud first. Hand out Finish It, or Write It for a confident writer. The student writes, then ticks a cut-apart checklist: capital letter, finger spaces, a word-bank word, a period, read it to someone. Every page prints clean in black and white.

Who It Is For

Kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, centers, sub plans, and any teacher with more than one kind of writer at the table.

WANT MORE?

This free sampler is cut from the paid picture-prompt series. The February Writing Picture Prompts set has twelve prompts, three pages each (the dotted Trace It page too), two word walls, a tracker, a class grid and a family page. Tiles on the last page of the PDF show the series.

Print And Write

This is a print-and-write PDF: the name and date lines and the writing rules are pencil work. It is not a fillable PDF, and it is not a Google Slides, PowerPoint or Google Docs file.

What This Is Not

Not a writing curriculum or an assessment, and no claim about any student's level.
