About this resource
Try task boxes before you buy any. This free sampler gives you five small sorts a child can do alone: odd or even, greater or less, one half, C or K, and true or false. Each one is a two-box sort mat and a sheet of 12 cards to cut apart, printed on cardstock and laminated if you like.
EVERYTHING INSIDE — 15 pages
- A Start Here page: how a task box works, in about a minute
- 5 sort mats, one per sort: a "My name" line, one short instruction for the child, and two boxes with six slots in each
- 5 card sheets, 12 cards each (60 cards in all): 6 cards belong in each box
- Cards that touch edge to edge, so every cut is one straight line (two straight cuts across and three down)
- An answer key listing every card
- A "More task boxes" page
The Five Sorts
- Odd or even: numbers from 3 to 20, one numeral on each card
- Greater or less: two numbers on a card, and the child decides if the first one is bigger or smaller
- One half: a bar split into equal parts, some of them colored, and the child decides if half is colored
- C or K: short words in a large, rounded font (cat, kit, cup, key)
- True or false: addition sentences with answers up to 10, some right and some wrong
Nothing on a card says which box it goes in. The mat names the boxes.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
It is a print-and-go PDF. It works offline and needs no account. The "My name" lines are for a pen. It is NOT an editable online slideshow or word-processor document, and it is not a test of anything. What counts as done and when to try the next sort are for you and your team. The sampler has no data sheet, so you record the work the way your team already does.
Who This Is For
Special education teachers and paraprofessionals setting up independent work stations or a task box rotation, and anyone who wants to see what a task box looks like before choosing a full set.
More Task Boxes
The full task boxes are in the Bright Path Sped store, including the Task Box Mega Bundle. Each full box is a single sort with more cards, a sort mat, an answer key, a data sheet and a percent graph.
