About this resource
Five plain shapes, on pages a child can pick up and start. Name the shape, trace it, count its sides and corners, find it in a mix, say whether a printed name or number is right, tell a closed shape from a line with a gap, cut and glue, or draw a shape from a few words. Every page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture, big shapes and room to work. Untimed: no clock, no score on the page.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (36 pages: 20 student pages, 16 for you)
- 104 practice items on 18 scored student pages, plus Look Together and Draw Your Own; no practice item repeats across the student pages
- Look Together: the circle, square, triangle, rectangle and hexagon with their names, sides and corners (a circle has 0 and 0), and a card that shows what a side and a corner are (1 page)
- Name It: circle the name from 2 words, from 3 words, then write it from a word bank (18 items, 3 pages)
- Trace It: trace a dashed shape, trace it and draw it again in a box, then join numbered dots (18 items, 3 pages)
- Sides and Corners: count the sides with numbers to help, count the corners by touching each dot, then count both with nothing to help (18 items, 3 pages)
- Find the Shape: circle every shape with the name, every shape with that many sides, then the shape with a different number of corners (16 rows, 3 pages); the shapes in every row are shuffled
- Yes or No: is the printed name right? is the printed number of corners right? Circle yes or no and write the right one (10 items, 2 pages)
- Shape or Not: closed lines are a shape, a line with a gap is not (6 items, 1 page)
- Cut and Glue: six pieces a page; shapes to names, names to shapes, shapes to corner counts (18 pieces, 3 pages)
- Draw Your Own: draw a shape with 3 sides, with 4 corners, with 6 sides, and write its name (3 boxes, 1 page)
- 162 shapes drawn on the scored pages, every one drawn in code from 24 figures: 4 circles, 4 squares, 6 triangles, 6 rectangles and 4 hexagons
- A shape guide, 2 answer keys (52 rows and 34 rows), an 18-row tracker, a class grid, a team note, a home page with three practice shapes, a filled example (an invented student), a phrase and math-talk bank (17 starters), a binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label
- Start Here, a how-it-works page and a "What's next" back page
Every Number Is Worked Out From The Shape
Each shape is a list of corner points (a circle has none). The file counts the sides and corners from the points and works out what the shape is: three corners is a triangle; four square corners with four equal sides is a square, otherwise a rectangle; six equal sides is a hexagon; a circle has 0 sides and 0 corners. It will not build if a picture and its numbers disagree. Only plain shapes are drawn: no ovals, no slanted or stretched shapes, no shapes with more than 6 sides. Every rectangle has a long side at least one and a half times its short side, and square and rectangle are never offered as wrong answers for each other by name.
Built For The Child, Not The Office
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture (a pencil, a circle, a book or scissors), rounded cards, and answer boxes at least half an inch tall. Trace It B and Draw Your Own have big empty boxes to draw in. Everything for you (directions, answer keys, scoring) is on separate teacher pages.
Three Levels, Marked By Dots
Cutting That Is Easy
Cut and Glue A and C have six pieces in a 3 by 2 block, three straight cuts, no gaps, every piece 2.2 by 1.3 inches. Cut and Glue B is one strip of six name pieces, each 1.22 by 1.3 inches. No piece sits under its own kind of box on the cut page, so cutting straight across and gluing straight down never gives the answers.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, every answer box, the tracker, class grid, team note and home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader; the shapes and cut pieces are always printed. Every page also prints clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten and first grade teachers, special education and resource room teachers, interventionists, and anyone who needs shape practice at more than one level in one file, with the tracking and family pages already made.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
An untimed practice set on circles, squares, triangles, rectangles and hexagons, with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed probe or a goal page, not a full geometry curriculum, and not a claim about any student's age, grade level or rate of progress. It does not cover 3D shapes, ovals or shapes with more than six sides.
