About this resource
Add three numbers within 20. Pages a child can pick up and start: join the two numbers that make 10, fill a ten-frame, add in any order and check, break a number apart to make a ten, spot a mistake, or cut and glue. Every page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction, and answer boxes made for a child's handwriting. Untimed: no clock, no score on the page.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (33 pages: 18 student pages, 15 for you)
- 75 practice problems (three-number totals run from 11 to 20); no practice problem repeats across the student pages, all computed in code (65 with three numbers, 10 Break Apart)
- Friends of Ten: the nine pairs that make 10, 1 + 9 up to 9 + 1, each on a ten-frame (1 page)
- Ways to Add Three: four ways to add three shown together: find the ten, ten-frame, any order and break apart (1 page)
- Find the Ten: three number tiles in a row and exactly one pair that makes 10; the arc is printed, or the child draws it, or the child also writes the ten (14 problems, 3 pages)
- Ten-Frame Fill: three drawn groups in two ten-frames to add, or the last group to draw in an empty frame, or draw to fill the first frame to 10 (15 problems, 3 pages)
- Any Order: add, add again in a new order, circle whether the totals are the same; on the second page the child writes the new order with the two that make 10 first (8 problems, 2 pages)
- Break Apart: 8 + 5 style problems, the classic make-a-ten step for two numbers; ten-frames show the break on the first page, a break-apart line on the second (10 problems, 2 pages)
- Fix It: a printed total that is right on 4 rows and wrong on 6; circle yes or no and write the right total (10 problems, 2 pages)
- Cut and Glue: six pieces a page, 3 by 2, three straight cuts; totals to problems on two pages, the missing number on the third (18 pieces, 3 pages)
- Draw Your Own: pick 3 numbers, draw them, add, write the total (1 page)
- 2 answer keys (37 rows and 38 rows), a tracker, a class grid, a team note, a home page with two empty ten-frames and three practice problems, a filled example (an invented student), a phrase and strategy bank (17 starters), a binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label
- Start Here, a how-it-works page and a "What's next" back page
Built For The Child, Not The Office
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture (a pencil, a book, a circle or scissors), rounded answer boxes at least half an inch tall, and plenty of room. Draw Your Own has three big drawing boxes, and two Ten-Frame Fill pages have frames to draw in. Everything for you (directions, answer keys, tracking) is on separate teacher pages.
Three Levels, Marked By Dots
One dot: starting (the arc is printed, the frames are printed, a faint total sits in the glue box). Two dots: building (draw your own arc, draw the last group, write the new order). Three dots: ready for more (write the two that make 10, draw to fill the frame, find the missing number, fix a mistake). The dots are the only level code, so children at one table are not comparing papers.
Every Problem Is Computed
Every total, every ten pair, every ten-frame picture, every wrong total on Fix It and every row of both answer keys is read from the same numbers that draw the page. There is no second, hand-typed key. On Find the Ten every row has exactly one pair that makes 10, so there is one arc to draw. Every wrong total on Fix It is one more, one fewer, or a total that leaves one of the three numbers out, so a child gets it right by checking, not by guessing "no."
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, every answer box, the tracker, class grid, team note and home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader; the number tiles, arcs, shapes, ten-frames and cut pieces are always printed. Every page also prints clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
First grade teachers, special education and resource room teachers, interventionists, and anyone who needs three-number addition practice at more than one level in one file, with the tracking and family pages already made.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
An untimed practice set for adding three one-digit numbers and making a ten, with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed fluency probe or a goal page, not a full math curriculum, and not a claim about any student's age, grade level or rate of progress. Every three-number total is from 11 to 20; there is no addition within 10 in this file.
