About this resource
Adding and subtracting fractions with like denominators, taught from a picture. Each problem sits next to a bar cut into equal parts: shaded parts and striped parts to add, crossed-out parts to take away. Then the numbers come on their own. Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture, big drawn bars, and answer boxes made for a child's handwriting. Untimed: no clock, no score on the page.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (27 pages: 11 student pages, 16 for you)
- 53 different problems, every one computed in code: 27 adding and 26 subtracting, bottom numbers from 3 to 12, every answer a fraction less than one whole, no problem used twice
- Look: one adding and one subtracting problem worked step by step on a bar (1 page)
- Add It: a bar shows both parts; write the sum (5 problems, 1 page)
- Subtract It: a bar with crossed-out parts; write what is left (5 problems, 1 page)
- Shade It: a blank bar; shade it, then write the answer (5 problems, 1 page)
- Fill It In: Set A, write the answer; Set B, write the missing number (12 problems, 2 pages)
- Word Problems: short stories about a fence, a jug of juice, a book and more, with room to draw (8 problems, 2 pages)
- Cut and Glue: six pieces a page in a 3 by 2 block, three straight cuts. Answers glued under problems, bars glued under problems, and problems sorted under true or false (18 pieces, 3 pages)
- 3 answer keys, a tracker, a class grid, a team note, a home page with a blank bar for the family to color, a filled example (an invented student), a phrase and strategy bank (17 starters), a binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label
- Start Here, a how-it-works page and a "What's next" back page
Built For The Child, Not The Office
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture (a pencil or scissors), big drawn bars, rounded boxes at least half an inch tall, and plenty of room. Everything for you (directions, answer keys, scoring) is on separate teacher pages. No clip art: the only pictures are the fraction bars themselves.
Three Levels, Marked By Dots
One dot: starting (a bar to count, or a bar to cross out). Two dots: building (shade the bar yourself, numbers only, a short story). Three dots: ready for more (find the missing number, sort true and false, a story with room to draw). The dots are the only level code, so children at one table are not comparing papers.
Every Item Is Computed
Every bar, every answer, every missing number, every story number, every false claim, every cut piece and every row of the three answer keys is read from the same problems that draw the page. There is no second, hand-typed key. Where an answer sits (which number is missing, true or false, the piece under a box) is placed by a seeded shuffle that rejects any order a child could guess. The false claims on the true-or-false page each have one slip, and the key says which.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, every answer box, the tracker, class grid, team note and home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader; the printed bars and cut pieces are always printed, and the shading on Shade It is done with a pencil. Every page also prints clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Third and fourth grade teachers, special education and resource room teachers, interventionists, and families who want the same pictures at home, with the tracking and home pages already made.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
An untimed practice set for adding and subtracting fractions whose bottom numbers match, with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed fluency probe or a goal page, not a full fractions curriculum, and not a claim about any student's grade level or rate of progress. Bottom numbers stop at 12; every answer is less than one whole, so there are no mixed numbers, no improper fractions and no unlike denominators.
