About this resource
Same first letter, different second letters — and, once that is solid, no shared first letter at all. This is a second-letter sorting kit for children who know the alphabet and the first-letter order: when all words start with B (bat, bed, big, bog, bug), put them in ABC order by their second letter (a, e, i, o, u). Five formats, three levels, at levels marked by dots so nobody's paper looks like the "easy" one. Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture, and room to write.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (32 pages)
- 16 student pages in 5 formats, at three levels
- 54 words organized by first letter, sorted by second letter
- 3 pages of Sort by Second Letter: 1, 2, 3 (5 rows of 3 words per page, write 1, 2, 3 in order by second letter)
- 3 pages of Write the Words (4 rows of 4 words per page, write the words on lines in order by second letter)
- 3 pages of Same First Letter (3 rows of 3 words per page; all three words in a row share the same first letter, the second letter decides)
- 3 pages of Cut and Paste (6 pieces per page, cut and glue in order by second letter)
- 4 pages of Mixed Review (3 rows of 3 words per page; words from different letter groups, no shared first letter — the child sorts the whole word)
- 2 answer keys, 1 tracker (16 rows), and 1 class progress grid
- 1 team note page, 1 home page, 1 filled example, and 1 phrase bank
- 1 binder cover, 5 divider tabs, and a spine label to cut out
- Start Here, a how-to-read-a-page page, and a contents page that gives every page number
Three Levels, Five Formats
The dots at the top of each page (1, 2, or 3) are the only level code: no color and no word. At 1 dot (Sort by Second Letter, Cut and Paste Set A) the first letters are different to warm up. At 2 dots (Write the Words, Cut and Paste Set B) the first letters are also different. At 3 dots (Same First Letter, Mixed Review, Cut and Paste Set C) all words in a row either share the same first letter, so the second letter decides, or share no first letter at all, so the whole word is compared.
Every Word Group Verified By Hand
Bat, bed, big, bog, bug: second letters are a, e, i, o, u, already in ABC order. Every one of the 16 first-letter groups (54 words total) was checked by hand to be in alphabetical order once sorted by the second letter, and no row on any page is ever shown already in the right order — the display is always a derangement of the answer, so a child cannot simply copy down what is already on the page. All words are CVC or high-frequency, from the store's own word bank.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
Large rounded letters, big spaces with room to write, one instruction in a few words, and nothing on a student page written for an adult. Adult material (directions, answer keys, the tracker) is on separate pages.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the tracker, the class grid, the team note and the home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The words a student writes are pencil work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
1st and 2nd grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher working with an older student who has the alphabet down and is ready to sort by more than the first letter. The home page sends the same job to a family; the team note hands off what changed since the last meeting.
