About this resource
Teaching balancing chemical equations and need pages students can actually work on? This is a complete unit for grades 8-10 that makes the Law of Conservation of Mass something students can count. It starts with the parts of an equation (reactants, products, coefficients, subscripts), a five-step chart and two worked examples with atom-count tables at every step. Each worked example has a guided Your Turn copy. Then come six practice sets in three steps up, marked by a circle, a square and a triangle: simple metals and gases, burning carbon compounds and acids, and groups in parentheses like Ca(OH)2 and Al2(SO4)3. Every problem has coefficient boxes and an atom-count table, so a student can see exactly which atom is off. Pages for reading and drawing atom models (atoms drawn as colored circles), finding a student's mistake, turning words into equations, a mixed review and three cut-and-paste sorts finish the unit. Answer keys show the atoms on each side.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (40 pages)
- 24 student pages in 12 page types, each with a name line and one short instruction
- 77 scored items on 17 pages, with every answer computed by program from the same equations that print on the page
- 1 page on the parts of an equation and the Law of Conservation of Mass; 1 vocabulary match with 3 atom-count questions; 1 count-the-atoms page (6 formulas)
- 1 five-step chart; 2 worked examples with atom-count tables at every step, and 2 guided Your Turn copies
- 24 practice equations in 6 sets of 4 (a circle, a square and a triangle mark the three steps up), each with coefficient boxes and an atom-count table
- 7 atom models: 4 to read (write the coefficients from the picture) and 3 to draw (draw the atoms in boxes)
- 6 Find the Mistake problems on 2 pages (an invented student's work, one mistake each, with a fix-it equation)
- 3 words-to-equations items and 4 mixed review equations; 1 self check (8 statements)
- 18 cut-and-paste pieces on 3 sort mats (balanced or not balanced; match the coefficient list; match the atom count)
- 3 answer keys; 1 tracker, 1 class grid, 1 team note, 1 family page
- 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (17 starters in 6 groups), 1 binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label to cut out
- Start Here and a Teacher Notes page
Built For The Student Holding The Page
A "My name" line, one short instruction with a small picture cue, and a plain scalloped border. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult: the keys and records are on separate teacher pages. Practice pages hold four problems each with real room for coefficient boxes and the atom table. The atom circles, a colored key and the three level shapes print as gray in black and white, and the file reads clean when copied. Clip art is kept to a lightbulb, a question mark and a pencil; the atoms are drawn in the file.
Invented Examples
Every equation here is a standard one written for practice. The students in Find the Mistake and the filled example are made up and say so. There is no lab procedure, safety rule or standards code anywhere in the file.
Type In, Or Print
The name line, every coefficient box, every atom-count table cell, every ruled work box and every check box are type-in fields in any PDF reader: click one, type, then save. The drawing boxes on Draw the Model are for pencil on a printed page. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
A balancing equations unit with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed test, a screener, a clinical tool, or a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. There is no IEP goal language or eligibility wording anywhere in the file.
