About this resource
Before a child can read a blend inside a whole word, they need to be able to pick its SOUND out of
a picture alone — hear /s/ and /n/ pushed together with no vowel between them, or /t/ and /r/, or
/k/ and /r/, or /f/ and /l/. Four skills, one beginning-blend job each, three levels of every one.
Two paired-blend skills first (sn or tr, then cr or fl), then a review skill where the word is
printed with its beginning blend missing so the picture and the rest of the word both help, and
last a sorting day where picture cards go into little houses labeled with this week's blends.
Every page is the same house, so a child who has done one page knows what to do on the next one:
say the picture, listen for the two sounds blended at the very start, glue the card where it lives.
How The Three Levels Work
Level 1 — six pictures, a tinted box showing exactly where the piece goes, and no spare piece to
account for. Both blends are still on the strip, because choosing between them is the skill; a
strip of identical pieces would be a page with the skill taken out of it.
Level 2 — the same pictures, no tint, and one spare piece: a second copy of a blend already in
play, so a student who counts the pieces instead of listening gets the page wrong.
Level 3 — no tint, nothing spare; the first paired skill (sn or tr) splits unevenly between the two
blends so neither one is the safe guess.
The Four Skills
1. Beginning Blends: sn or tr
2. Beginning Blends: cr or fl
3. Review: Beginning Blends — the picture, then the word printed with its first blend missing
(_ail, _uck), mixing 3 of the 4 taught blends at a time so every blend comes up again across the
skill
4. Sort by Beginning Blend — picture cards into blend houses, four houses at every level (one house
carries a second card so the page still clears five pieces)
Every Picture Names Its Word
On the two paired-blend skills and the sorting day, no word is printed next to any picture: the
only print on the sheet is the blends themselves — on the roof sign, over each sorting house, and
on each card to cut — so the picture is the whole prompt. Only four blends are taught here (sn, tr,
cr, fl), chosen because this store's licensed picture set has at least three clean, unambiguous
pictures for each of them; every other consonant blend was checked and left out for having too few
safe pictures to build an honest page, not padded with a guess. Pictures a child could plausibly
name a different way that would point at a WRONG house were kept off these pages rather than
shipped with a hopeful answer key — a snow-covered cloud whose most natural name is "cloud," a
flowerpot the catalog's own data admits is shared with "plant." The reasoning for every dropped
picture is on record, not just the decision.
Every picture is full-color, big enough to name across a table, inside a house frame drawn in heavy
black line, so the page still reads as a clean photocopy.
What Is In The File
- 22 pages, one PDF
- 4 scripted lesson plan pages — a script in quotation marks a substitute could read cold, three
level notes, three "if a student is stuck" tips with the likely cause named, a try-it-today idea
and a data box on every plan
- 12 student worksheets (4 skills x 3 levels)
- 2 pages of answer keys, recomputed from the same data that draws the worksheets
- 1-page "how to use this packet" guide
- A name and date line, a big direction line and a cut rule on every worksheet
- Every cut piece sits edge to edge with its neighbor (one straight cut between pieces, never a
gap), at least five pieces on every page, in one or two short rows
- No level word and no teacher note anywhere on a student page: the three dots on the name line are
the only level code, and they are there for you, not for the child
Who This Is For
Self-contained, resource and early-intervention classrooms, and any K-2 room with students who have
their single beginning and ending sounds and are ready for two consonants blended together. It
works alongside this store's Middle Sound Sort Cut and Paste pack (same shape, the middle vowel
instead), Syllable Sort Cut and Paste, and Blends Cut and Paste - 3 Levels (building and reading the
words themselves, not sorting pictures).
What This Is, And What It Is Not
A print-and-cut worksheet packet with a scripted plan page in front of each skill. It is not a
fillable form, not a full curriculum, and not a claim about how quickly any student will hear a
beginning blend — every objective is written the way a classroom goal is written, with nothing
clinical, no timeline and no eligibility claim attached to it.
