About this resource
EVERYTHING INSIDE — 17 pages
- The bell curve, drawn once and lined up: standard score (middle 100), scaled score (middle 10), T-score (middle 50) and percentile rank, with seven marked positions and the share of the group in each slice. In color on page 5 and as an ink-saver version (black line, light gray) on page 6
- Blank lines on each curve page for your district's own wording and your district's rule
- The four scales in plain words: four cards, plus a box for the test you are explaining
- A family handout with blanks for the child's own scores (standard, scaled, T-score, percentile) and plain-words lines
- My Child's Scores: a 13-row table for dates, tests, the four scores and who gave the test
- What a Score Does and Does Not Tell You: two columns, with lines for what no test shows
- Meeting notes: who was here, what the scores were, what the family said, what happens next
- Questions for the Team: 12 starters in 3 groups, plus lines for the family's own questions
- A note home with blanks in your own words
- A phrase bank of 32 starters in 8 groups
- A filled example: one invented child, with the four scales worked from the standard score
- A binder cover, a spine label and 8 cut-apart tabs
- Start Here, a contents page with page thumbnails, and a "what's next" back page
Most bell curve files are one picture. This one also gives you the words to say, a handout a family can write on, a page that says what a score is not, and the pages for the meeting itself.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
It is a fillable PDF: type into the handout, notes and questions, or print and use a pen. It works offline with no account or subscription. It is NOT a Google Slides, Google Docs or Excel file, it does not work out scores for you, and you cannot drag the boxes around or restyle the pages.
It is the working paper behind a conversation about test scores. It does not name any range as meaning anything, give a cutoff, or say what a team should do. What a range is called and what happens next are your district's rules, and each gets a blank line to write it on. The curve shows only arithmetic of a normal distribution. No scores are pre-filled for a real child. The example child, test and numbers are invented and say so on the page.
Who This Is For
Special education case managers, school psychologists, speech-language pathologists and teachers who explain test scores to families, and the families who get the handout.
