About this resource
Need a blank world map your students can label, and the map skills that go with it? This is a complete set for grades 6-8: four blank world maps to print as many times as you like, pages to label the seven continents and the five oceans, and the skills a world map teaches, from the equator and the prime meridian to hemispheres, compass directions and reading latitude and longitude on a grid. Five short readings come first, each with a main idea box, an example box and two checks. Answer keys include a full-color labeled answer map.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (45 pages)
- 27 student pages in 11 kinds of page, each with a name line and one short instruction
- 139 scored items spread over 22 of the student sheets, every answer taken from the same lists and map numbers that print on the page
- 4 blank world maps, two per sheet to copy for anything: 2 outline maps, 1 with a 30-degree latitude and longitude grid and degree numbers, 1 with the equator and prime meridian drawn
- 7 map pages (61 items): label the 7 continents, label the 5 oceans (plus 3 questions), find the equator and the prime meridian, name the hemispheres of 6 dots, give the compass direction between 8 pairs of continents, read the latitude, longitude and place of 6 dots on a grid, and name what is at 8 coordinates
- 5 readings of 169 to 183 words (the seven continents, the five oceans, hemispheres, latitude and longitude, parts of a map), each with a main idea box and an example box (at least 3 ruled lines each) and 2 checks (10 checks in all)
- 1 Before You Read page with 4 true-or-false items and 1 Words to Know page (match 8 words)
- 1 Which Ocean? sort (8 clues) and 1 Plan a Trip Around the World page that uses a named, colored map and a compass rose
- 4 short-answer questions with at least 4 ruled lines each
- 24 quiz items: two multiple-choice quizzes of 6 and a map quiz that labels all 12 spots on a blank map; 1 self check (8 statements)
- 24 cut-and-paste pieces on 4 mats, 6 pieces each in a 3 by 2 grid: match the continent, Northern or Southern Hemisphere, Eastern or Western Hemisphere, and latitude or longitude
- 5 answer pages: keys for every scored page, samples for the open answers and a labeled world map; 1 tracker, 1 class grid, 1 team note, 1 family page
- 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (17 starters in 6 groups)
- A binder cover with type-in teacher and class fields, and a page of divider tabs (Readings, Maps, Quiz, Keys, Records) with a spine label to cut out
- Start Here and a how-to-read-a-page page
How To Use It
Start with the readings and the Before You Read page, then work through the map pages in order: label, find the lines, hemispheres, directions, the grid. The blank maps are for anything else you need: a unit map, a test, a coloring page, a project. Copy them as often as you like. The cut-and-paste mats and the map quiz make quick review. The keys tell you the answer to every dot, number and coordinate.
Built For The Student Holding The Page
A "My name" line, one short instruction with a small picture cue, a plain scalloped border and big answer boxes. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult: the keys and records are on separate teacher pages. The maps are drawn by us from public-domain Natural Earth outlines, with straight latitude and longitude lines, so the equator, the prime meridian and the grid are easy to see. The continents are colored only to tell them apart, and the pages still read in black and white. The cut pages have six pieces in a strip-and-grid layout, edge to edge, so there are only a few straight cuts.
A Short Account, Not A Full Textbook
Each reading is a plain-words summary written for this file, with rounded numbers and textbook facts. It does not quote any source and it is not tied to a particular standard. The map is a simplified flat map: it stretches places near the poles, and the pages say so. The colored maps divide Europe and Asia along the usual textbook line (the Urals, the Ural River, the Caspian Sea, the Caucasus and the Bosporus); the blank maps draw them as one landmass. Check it all against your own textbook or atlas. The only student in the file is an invented example, and it says so.
Type In, Or Print
The name line, every answer box, every check box and every ruled work box are type-in fields in any PDF reader: click one, type, then save. You can also print any page and write by hand. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
A set of blank world maps, label pages and map-skills pages with the record-keeping around it. It covers the world map: the continents, oceans, hemispheres, directions and the latitude and longitude grid, not a country-by-country political map. It is not a timed test, a screener, a clinical tool, or a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. There is no IEP goal language or eligibility wording anywhere in the file, and no claim of alignment to any standard.
