About this resource
Teaching the four cardinal and four intermediate directions takes more than a poster — it takes practice a child
can write and circle, and a way to track which directions still need it. This is a complete kit for all
eight: three different ways to practice each domain, a tracker, a class grid, a family note and a
compass center / meeting starter, so nothing has to be written from scratch.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (25 pages)
- 8 student pages in 3 formats: 4 Match It pages (2 sets of cardinal, 2 sets of intermediate, write the
letter), 2 Fill in the Blank pages (one a domain, a word bank of directions), 2 Circle It pages (one a
domain, circle the correct direction from two choices)
- 32 fact sentences in all, every one checked and never repeated anywhere in the file
- 2 answer keys, generated from the same fact data as the student pages
- 1 tracker (matching / fill-in / circle-it, by direction) and 1 whole-class progress grid
- 1 family note (a ready-to-send update) and 1 compass center / meeting starter (a different
setting — whole class or a center, not individual seatwork)
- 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (15 observable-language starters), 1 binder
cover, and 4 divider tabs with a spine label (5 pieces total) to cut out
- Start Here, a how-to-read-a-page page, a contents page that gives every page number, and a Meet
the Directions reference page with two facts each
The Three Formats, Easiest To Hardest
1. Match It (starting) — short direction facts on a page; write the letter of the cardinal or
intermediate direction each one describes. Two sets a domain, so every direction appears twice, each
time with a different true fact.
2. Fill in the Blank (building) — a word bank of every direction in the domain and one sentence per
direction; complete the sentence with the right direction.
3. Circle It (ready for more) — a short fact and two direction choices; circle the one the fact
describes.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction, large rounded letters, real room to write or circle,
and dots (not words) to show which level a page is. Nothing on a student page is written for an
adult.
Every Fact Is Checked, And There Is No Compass Rose
Every direction fact (North is at the top, Northeast is between North and East, and so on) was checked by hand
before it was written. No compass rose, map or other picture appears anywhere in the file — every page is
plain text, pencil work.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the tracker, the class grid, the family note and the meeting starter are
type-in fields in any PDF reader. The letters and directions a student writes are pencil work. This is a
fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher
running a compass skills or direction unit. The compass center / meeting starter sends the
same eight directions to a whole-class or center setting; the family note sends them home.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
A K-2 direction worksheet set with the record-keeping around it. It is not a map-skills or
atlas-reading unit, a geography curriculum, or a claim about any student's age or rate of progress.
There is no IEP goal language or eligibility wording anywhere in the file.
