About this resource
Five country units in one download, so a December social studies and reading study can travel the world. Students read about how families celebrate Christmas in Mexico, Australia, Germany, France and Italy, find each country on a map, match the new words, cut and paste three sorts, build a craft and write. Every unit is written in short plain sentences for grades 2-5 readers who need them, and every page has a "My name" line, one short instruction and room to work.
WHAT IS IN THE BUNDLE - 5 PDFs, 145 pages
- Christmas in Mexico - 27 pages: a 3-part reader (Las Posadas, the poinsettia, the piñata, tamales, Nochebuena, Three Kings Day), a Words to Know page, a map of North America, true or false, three cut-and-paste sorts, a compare page and a poinsettia craft
- Christmas in Australia - 34 pages: five short readings about a summer Christmas, a map page with the equator, a Words to Know page, three picture sorts, an order page, cut-and-glue word pages, a Summer Santa craft and a Venn page
- Christmas in Germany - 28 pages: four short readers (the Advent wreath and calendar, St. Nicholas Day, the Christmas market, Lebkuchen, nutcrackers, the Christmas tree and the Christkind), a map of Europe, German words, three cut-and-paste pages, a nutcracker craft and an Advent countdown
- Christmas in France - 28 pages: four short readers (Joyeux Noël, Père Noël, the crèche and santons, le réveillon, the bûche de Noël, the 13 desserts, the galette des rois), a map of Europe, French words, three cut-and-paste pages, a paper crown craft and a 13 desserts page
- Christmas in Italy - 28 pages: four short readers (La Befana, panettone, the Feast of the Seven Fishes, the presepe, the zampognari, Buon Natale), a map of Europe, Italian words, a seven-fishes page, three cut-and-paste pages and a La Befana craft
In Every Unit
A Start Here page, reading with check questions, a map, a word page, cut-and-paste sorts, a craft, writing pages, a compare page (the country and my home), answer keys, a tracker, a class grid, a family page and a filled example with an invented student (it says so on the page).
Who Is It For
Grades 2-5 classrooms, special education resource rooms, self-contained classes and homeschool. Use one country a day or one a week, as a center, as morning work or as a December theme unit. Families celebrate in different ways, and the units say so: they describe customs the way a social studies lesson does (families, food, songs, flowers and parties) and do not teach any religion.
Built For The Student Holding The Page
The student pages carry no adult text: the keys and records are on separate teacher pages. Cut pages have at least 5 pieces, edge to edge, so there are only a few straight cuts. The sort and writing pages mark three levels with a small shape in the corner (circle, square or triangle) and nothing else, so every child gets the same page front.
Type In, Or Print
Each of the 5 files is a fillable PDF: click a box, type, then save, or print it and write by hand. It works offline with no account or subscription. It is not Google Slides, not Google Docs and not PowerPoint. Printing, cutting and gluing supplies are not included.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
A set of country studies with the record-keeping around them. It is not a timed test, a screener or a clinical tool, and it makes no claim about any student's age or rate of progress. There is no IEP goal language or eligibility wording in the files, and no claim of alignment to any standard.
