About this resource
A context clue is a hint already sitting inside a sentence. This is the Christmas / winter-break version of our context-clues kit for second grade, with three practice formats that build from recognizing to sorting to writing: first testing a given meaning against a sentence's own wording, then cutting and sorting, then writing an original sentence that gives a clue of its own. Every sentence is set at Christmas and winter break — trees, lights, snow, mittens, cocoa, wrapped presents — invented, secular and grade-appropriate.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (23 pages)
- 8 student pages in 3 page types plus a Helper page (below), each with a big "My name" line and one short instruction
- 42 context-clue sentences, all invented, grade-appropriate and Christmas / winter-break themed: 18 across Circle (3 sets of 6) and 24 across Sort (2 pages of 12). Every meaning text in the file is used exactly once, so a meaning a child has seen marked "Fits the Clue" never shows up later as a "Doesn't Fit" answer
- 2 cut-and-sort pages, 12 cards each (6 Fits the Clue, 6 Doesn't Fit the Clue), edge-to-edge in a 4-by-3 grid
- 2 answer keys generated from the same data as the pages, plus the one rule a Write Your Own sentence must meet to count
- 1 tracker (16 rows), 1 team note, 1 home page, 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (21 starters)
- 1 binder cover and divider tabs (5 tabs plus a spine label) that drop straight into a classroom binder
- Start Here, a how-to-read-a-page page, a definitions page with blanks for your program's own wording, and a back page
THE THREE PAGE TYPES (dots show the level, never color)
1. Context Clues Helper (1 dot) — one sentence tested against two given meanings, side by side, in kid words
2. Circle Fits or Doesn't Fit (1 dot, 3 pages) — read a sentence and a given meaning, circle the answer
3. Sort Fits the Clue (2 dots, 2 pages) — cut cards and glue them into Fits the Clue or Doesn't Fit the Clue bins
4. Write Your Own (3 dots, 2 pages) — write an original sentence that gives a clue to a given word's meaning (frosty, giddy, peaceful, thrilled)
Sentences come in three sets of six for Circle, and two sets of twelve for Sort, so a child never meets the same sentence, or the same given meaning, twice.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction, large rounded letters, and space to write. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult. Cutting is limited to Sort Fits the Clue: 12 pieces a page in a 4-by-3 grid, edge to edge, each wide enough to read and glue.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the tracker, the team note, the home page and the definitions page note box are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The lines a student writes on are pencil work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Second grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher working with an older student who still needs this skill, with a secular Christmas / winter-break theme for December. The home page sends practice sentences to a family; the team note hands off what changed since the last meeting.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Context-clues practice with the record-keeping around it, dressed for the season. It is not a probe, a goal bank or a score sheet, not a reading assessment, and not a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. Clues that span more than one sentence, and meaning banks with more than one plausible answer, are not practiced. Write Your Own is checked against one plain-language rule, never a single right wording.
