About this resource
A classroom escape room that prints and runs in one sitting, with no envelopes to stuff and no answer to look up twice. The gift room is locked before the party; four puzzles hold the four numbers of the code. Every puzzle comes in three levels, and every level of a puzzle gives the same number, so a table of mixed readers and mathematicians opens the same lock. Print it and hand it out, or type into it.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (32 pages)
- 12 puzzle pages: 4 puzzles in 3 levels each (one, two or three dots on the name line), every level giving the same lock number
- Puzzle 1, math facts: 10 facts a page. Add and subtract to 20, add and subtract to 100, or multiply and divide. A printed key turns each answer into a letter; the letters spell a phrase with a number word in it
- Puzzle 2, unscramble: 5 Christmas words a page (15 in all). One letter box in each word is circled; the circled letters spell a number word. A word bank with the first letter given, a word bank, or no bank
- Puzzle 3, secret note: a number cipher (A is 1, Z is 26). A 13-letter note, a 21-letter note, or the 21-letter note with the key run backwards
- Puzzle 4, patterns: 4 what-comes-next rows a page (12 in all): repeating shapes, longer repeats with shapes and words, then number patterns. The corner numbers of the right picks make a counting pattern whose next number is the lock number, so a wrong pick shows itself
- 1 mission page (the story, four steps, a mission list with page numbers, a team list) and 1 lock page (four windows, hints used, start and finish time, teacher check)
- 9 hint tickets to cut (3 a team), 1 team talk page (four sentence starters and a star rating) and 1 certificate
- 2 answer-key pages printed from the same data as the puzzles, with the code and a hint for every puzzle
- 1 team log, 1 class results grid (10 teams), 1 filled example (an invented team), 1 family note with a secret note to decode at home, 1 phrase bank (17 starters)
- 1 binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label to cut out
- Start Here, a how-to-run-it page (setup, hints, three ways to open the lock) and a contents page
How It Runs
Print the mission page and the lock page once a team and one level of each puzzle for each team. Read the story aloud, hand out three hint tickets a team, start the clock. Teams solve the four puzzles in any order, write each number in its window and bring the lock page to you. You are the lock, or set a real 4-digit lock to the code on the key page. Then the certificate, the team talk page, the team log and the family note.
Every Puzzle Has One Answer
Each puzzle was checked by a program while the pages were built: every math answer on a page is different and the printed key decodes to the phrase; no two scramble words share the same letters; each note holds exactly one number word; every pattern row has one next item and the corner-number check breaks on any wrong pick. The answer keys are printed from that same data, so a key and a puzzle cannot disagree.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction with an icon, three numbered steps, large rounded type and boxes a child's handwriting fits in. The dots on the name line are the only mark of the level, so nobody at the table can see who has which page. No clip art: words, numbers, plain shapes and a padlock drawn in code.
Easy Cutting
The hint tickets and the divider tabs are the only cutting. Pieces touch edge to edge, so every cut is one straight line, and every piece is more than an inch on each side.
Type In, Or Print
Answer boxes, letter boxes, the lock windows, the team list, the writing lines, the team log, the class results grid and the notes are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The pages print clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Docs or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
2nd through 4th grade classrooms the weeks before winter break: a 30 to 45 minute whole-class event, a week of centers one puzzle a day, or early finishers taking one puzzle page alone. Resource rooms and self-contained classes can run it with the one-dot pages and still open the same lock as everyone else.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Math fact, word, cipher and pattern practice inside a classroom game, with the record-keeping around it. It is not a probe, a goal bank or a score sheet, and makes no claim about any student's age or progress. It teaches nothing about the history of the holiday; the story is a locked gift room and a party. All names are invented.
