About this resource
A child who can read the words is not always ready to build a sentence. Here the words come on a strip: cut it, paste the words in order, read it, write it, and color the picture that goes with it — snowman, gloves, sled, scarf and 20 more winter and Christmas pictures. Every strip is one straight row of big word tiles, so a small hand makes as few cuts as possible.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (35 pages)
- 19 student pages: 15 cut, paste and write pages (Set A 3, Set B 6, Set C 6), 3 Word Order pages with no scissors, and 1 Sentence Helper page
- 24 sentences of 5 or 6 words, 24 winter and Christmas pictures to color, 1 picture key
- 1 answer key, generated from the same data as the pages: every sentence and every strip exactly as printed
- 1 tracker (all 24 sentences), 1 class progress grid
- 1 team note page and 1 home page with a strip of its own to cut
- 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (16 starters), 1 binder cover, and 6 divider tabs with a spine label to cut out
- Start Here, a how-to-read-a-page page and a contents page that gives every page number
The Four Formats, Most Support To Least
1. Set A, Cut, Paste, Trace (3 pages, 6 sentences of 5 words, 2 a page) — the paste boxes hold the words in light gray so the child matches each tile, and the sentence is printed in gray on the first writing line to trace.
2. Set B, Cut, Paste, Write (6 pages, 12 sentences of 5 or 6 words, 2 a page) — empty paste boxes and two primary writing lines.
3. Set C, Color, Cut, Paste, Write (6 pages, 6 sentences of 6 words, 1 a page) — a big picture to color, the strip, the paste boxes, the sentence to write, and a line for a sentence of the child's own.
4. Word Order, no scissors (3 pages, 12 of the sentences above, 4 a page) — the words are printed in a jumble; the child writes the sentence in order. The same job for the day scissors are the hard part.
Each page is marked with dots, not words, so the children at one table cannot see who has which level.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture, large rounded letters, three-line primary writing paper, and a light outline picture to color. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult.
Easy Cutting
Every strip is a single row of 5 or 6 tiles that touch, so each cut is one straight line. Tiles are at least 1.1 inches tall and at least 1.25 inches wide. The strip is never printed in answer order: no tile sits where it belongs and no two neighbors are already a pair. The big letter starts the sentence and the dot or question mark ends it, so those two tiles are the clue.
The Sentences
Every word of every sentence is in one of four lists: this store's CVC words, its Fry first-100 sight words, the words of its decodable sentence bank, or the name of the picture. Each sentence has exactly one picturable thing (the snowman, the moon, the fox) and that thing is the picture. All 24 sentences are new for this winter set.
Pictures That Name Their Word
The 24 pictures are Google Noto Emoji, each checked against Microsoft Fluent Emoji High Contrast, printed as light outlines a child can color. Every picture was looked at once rendered, including the boot and the snowman. Mittens were left out because the only Unicode picture for them is the same one used for gloves. If a child says another name for a picture, the picture key tells the adult to say the word and move on.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the writing lines, the tracker, the class grid, the team note and the home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The pages print clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten and first grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher working with an older student who still needs to build sentences, during a winter or Christmas unit. The home page sends the same job to a family; the team note hands off what changed since the last meeting.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Sentence-building practice with the record-keeping around it. It is not a probe, a goal bank or a score sheet, not a reading assessment, and not a claim about any student's age or rate of progress.
