About this resource
"I packed a hat gloves and a scarf" is missing two commas, and a second grader usually cannot hear where they go. This is a full commas-in-a-series kit: circle the correct version, fix a sentence with no commas at all, build a list from a word bank, cut and glue commas into the gaps, then write a list sentence of your own — with primary handwriting lines and room to work on every writing page.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (30 pages)
- 14 student pages in 6 page types (below), each with a big "My name" line and one short instruction
- 60 different list sentences, all invented, short and neutral; every one lists three or four items, always with a comma before the final "and"; no practice sentence repeats across the student pages
- The rule practiced: a comma after every item in a list of three or more, including the one right before "and"
- 18 cut-and-glue commas, six a page, in a block that takes 3 straight cuts
- 1 rules page for the teacher (with a blank line for your program's own wording), 2 answer keys generated from the same data as the pages
- 1 tracker (12 rows), 1 class progress grid, 1 team note, 1 home page, 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (17 starters)
- 1 binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label to cut out
- Start Here, a how-to-read-a-page page, and a back page
THE SIX PAGE TYPES (dots show the level, never color)
1. Comma Helper (1 dot) — two items need no comma, three or more need one after every item, including before "and," shown on labeled cards.
2. Circle It (1 dot, 3 pages) — two printed versions of one sentence; the child circles the one with the commas right. The other always has exactly one real mistake: a missing comma between items, a missing comma before "and," or an extra comma that does not belong.
3. Find and Fix (2 dots, 3 pages) — a list sentence printed with no commas at all; the child writes it right on primary lines.
4. Write the List (2 dots, 3 pages) — a word bank of three items and a sentence starter; the child writes the finished list, commas and all.
5. Glue the Commas (2 dots, 3 pages) — two four-item-list sentences printed with a small gap where each comma goes; cut six comma cards from a 3 by 2 block (three straight cuts) and glue one into every gap.
6. My List Sentence (3 dots, 1 page) — three prompts; the child writes and draws a list sentence of their own.
Sentences come in three sets of six (A, B, C) for Circle It, Find and Fix and Write the List, and two sentences a page for Glue the Commas, so a child never meets the same sentence twice on one page type.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture, large rounded letters, and writing boxes on primary lines at least 0.56 inch tall. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult. Cutting is limited to Glue the Commas: six identical comma pieces a page, touching edge to edge in a 3 by 2 block, every piece at least 1.1 inches.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the tracker, the class grid, the team note, the home page and the rules-page note box are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The letters a student writes in the boxes are pencil work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Second grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher working with an older student who still mixes up commas in a list. The home page sends the same job to a family; the team note hands off what changed since the last meeting.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Commas-in-a-series practice with the record-keeping around it — a student worksheet pack, not a progress-monitoring probe or a data sheet. This store's Comma Usage Editing Progress Monitoring Probes is the companion for IEP goal tracking (six probe forms, a goal box, a graph); this product is the opposite shape, built to be handed straight to a child to circle, write and glue. Commas in dates, addresses, greetings and closings, introductory words, and compound sentences are not practiced here — each is its own lesson, named on the rules page.
