About this resource
Turn the two numbers around and the total stays the same. Commutative property of addition, taught the way a first or second grader meets it: 3 + 6 and 6 + 3 are turn-around facts. Match them, circle them, fill them in, draw them in ten-frames, decide if a statement is true or false, and cut and glue. Every page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction, and answer boxes made for a child's handwriting. Untimed: no clock, no score on the page.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (31 pages: 15 student pages, 16 for you)
- 64 different addition facts, totals from 5 to 20, all computed in code; each fact appears on exactly one student page. Every fact has two different numbers, so every one has a turn-around
- Turn It Around: one fact in ten-frame pictures and on a number line, then the same two numbers in the other order, then a Your turn row where the child writes a fact and turns it around (1 page)
- Match It: six facts and six lettered turn-arounds; the child writes the letter (12 facts, 2 pages)
- Circle It: circle the turn-around of a fact from three choices, then circle the one true statement from three (10 problems, 2 pages)
- Fill It In: write the total of the turn-around, write the missing number, or write both numbers and the total with a "My work" box (14 problems, 3 pages)
- Show It: count two drawn groups in ten-frames and write both facts, draw the turned picture, then pick two numbers and draw your own (6 facts plus a free page, 3 pages)
- True or False: a printed statement such as 3 + 11 = 11 + 6; circle true or false and fix the false ones (10 statements, 4 true and 6 false, 2 pages)
- Cut and Glue: six cards a page, 3 by 2, three straight cuts; turn-arounds glued by their facts, then true and false cards sorted onto two mats (12 cards, 2 pages)
- A fact map showing every fact in the file and which page it is on, 2 answer keys (36 rows and 28 rows), a tracker, a class grid, a team note, a home page with blank equations for the family to fill in, a filled example (an invented student), a phrase and strategy bank (17 starters), a binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label
- Start Here, a how-it-works page and a "What's next" back page
Built For The Child, Not The Office
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture (a pencil, a circle or scissors), rounded boxes at least half an inch tall, and plenty of room. Fill It In C adds a "My work" box and Show It C has two big drawing boxes. Everything for you (directions, answer keys, scoring) is on separate teacher pages.
Three Levels, Marked By Dots
One dot: starting (the turn-around is shown, both pictures are printed, a faint picture in the glue box). Two dots: building. Three dots: ready for more (find the missing numbers, decide true or false, sort true and false cards, draw your own). The dots are the only level code, so children at one table are not comparing papers.
Every Fact Is Computed
Every answer, every picture, every wrong choice and every row of both answer keys is read from the same pair of numbers that draws the page. There is no second, hand-typed key. Where an answer sits (the letter in a match, the choice to circle, true or false, the card under a box) is placed by a seeded shuffle that rejects any order a child could guess: not counting up, not counting down, no run of three, no back-and-forth. On Circle It A one choice is the same fact in the same order, so a child who copies instead of turning it around finds out.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, every answer box, the tracker, class grid, team note and home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader; the pictures, ten-frames and cut cards are always printed. Every page also prints clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
First and second grade teachers, special education and resource room teachers, interventionists, and anyone who needs turn-around facts practice at more than one level in one file, with the tracking and family pages already made.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
An untimed practice set for turning addition facts around, with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed fluency probe or a goal page, not a full math curriculum, and not a claim about any student's age, grade level or rate of progress. Doubles such as 6 + 6 are left out on purpose, because turning one around changes nothing. Subtraction is not in this file.
