About this resource
Guide words are the two bold words at the top of a dictionary page: the first entry on that page and the last entry on that page. This is a full dictionary guide-words kit for second grade, with three practice formats that build from comparing to sorting to inventing: first circling the right bin, then cutting and sorting, then writing an original word that fits a guide pair and one that doesn't.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (23 pages)
- 8 student pages in 3 page types plus a Helper page (below), each with a big "My name" line and one short instruction
- 34 guide-word decisions across the two practice formats: 18 words on Circle Before, On, or After, plus 16 word strips on Sort by the Guide Words (8 per page); every decision is checked in code against Python's own string order, the same order a dictionary alphabetizes by
- 2 cut-and-sort pages, 8 strips each (3 Before, 2 On this page, 3 After), edge-to-edge in a 4-by-2 grid
- 2 answer keys generated from the same data as the pages, plus the two rules a Write Your Own word pair must meet to count
- 1 tracker (16 rows), 1 team note, 1 home page, 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (21 starters)
- 1 binder cover and divider tabs (5 tabs plus a spine label) that drop straight into a classroom binder
- Start Here, a how-to-read-a-page page, a definitions page with blanks for your program's own wording, and a back page
THE THREE PAGE TYPES (dots show the level, never color)
1. Guide Words Helper (1 dot) — what Before this page, On this page, and After this page mean, side by side, in kid words
2. Circle Before, On, or After (1 dot, 3 pages) — one guide-word pair and six words, circle where each word belongs
3. Sort by the Guide Words (2 dots, 2 pages) — cut word strips and glue them into Before, On, or After bins
4. Write Your Own (3 dots, 2 pages) — invent one word that would belong on a given guide-word page and one that would not
Circle Before, On, or After comes in three sets (A, B, C), each its own guide-word pair; Sort by the Guide Words comes in two pages of eight strips, each its own guide-word pair; no guide-word pair repeats anywhere in the file.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction, large rounded letters, and space to write. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult. Cutting is limited to Sort by the Guide Words: 8 pieces a page in a 4-by-2 grid, edge to edge, each wide enough to read and glue.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the tracker, the team note, the home page and the definitions page note box are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The lines a student writes on are pencil work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Second grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher working with an older student who still needs this dictionary-skills standard. The home page sends practice words to a family; the team note hands off what changed since the last meeting.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Dictionary guide-words practice with the record-keeping around it. It is not a probe, a goal bank or a timed data sheet, not a reading assessment, and not a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. Multi-word dictionary entries and guide-word pairs that are a near-tie (sharing more than their first few letters) are not practiced; every guide-word pair in this pack differs by a clearly different letter early in the word. Write Your Own is checked against two plain-language rules, never a single right-answer key.
