About this resource
Doubles and near doubles within 20, taught with pictures. Pages a child can pick up and start: read the ten doubles as two matching ten-frames, write the total, draw the matching frame, add or take away the one that makes a near double, find the missing number, spot a mistake, or cut and glue. Every page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction, and answer boxes made for a child's handwriting. Untimed: no clock, no score on the page.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (32 pages: 16 student pages, 16 for you)
- 68 practice problems (34 doubles, 34 near doubles) from the 19 facts 1 + 1 up to 10 + 10 and 1 + 2 up to 9 + 10, all computed in code; no fact repeats on a page, and the same fact comes back on other page types as a different job
- Know Your Doubles: the ten doubles, 1 + 1 to 10 + 10, each as two matching ten-frames (1 page)
- Ways to Add: double, double plus 1, double minus 1, and one fact done two ways, each with frames (1 page)
- Double It: write the total of two matching frames, or draw the matching frame in an empty one, or write the double when the total is printed (15 problems, 3 pages)
- Near Doubles: a gold triangle marks the one more and a dashed ring marks the one fewer; write the double, then add or take away 1; the last page asks the child to choose the double (15 problems, 3 pages)
- Missing Number: an addend is missing; frames to draw in on the first page, open drawing space on the second (10 problems, 2 pages)
- Fix It: a printed total that is right on 4 rows and wrong on 6; circle yes or no and write the right total (10 problems, 2 pages)
- Cut and Glue: six pieces a page, 3 by 2, three straight cuts; totals to doubles, pictures of two ten-frames to number sentences, and totals to near doubles (18 pieces, 3 pages)
- Draw Your Own: pick a double, a near double and one of your choice, draw them, add (1 page)
- 50 pictures of two ten-frames to read, fill or draw in
- 2 answer keys (40 rows and 28 rows), a fact map of all 19 facts, a tracker, a class grid, a team note, a home page with two empty ten-frames and three practice problems, a filled example (an invented student), a phrase and strategy bank (17 starters), a binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label
- Start Here, a how-it-works page and a "What's next" back page
Built For The Child, Not The Office
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture (a pencil, a book, a circle or scissors), rounded answer boxes at least half an inch tall, and plenty of room. Missing Number B and Draw Your Own have open drawing space, and Double It B and C have empty frames to draw in. Everything for you (directions, answer keys, tracking) is on separate teacher pages.
Three Levels, Marked By Dots
One dot: starting (the frames are drawn, the double is printed for the child, a faint total sits in the glue box). Two dots: building (draw the matching frame, change the double by 1, match pictures to numbers). Three dots: ready for more (find the double from the total, pick the double yourself, missing numbers with no picture). The dots are the only level code, so children at one table are not comparing papers.
Every Problem Is Computed
Every total, every double, every ten-frame picture, every wrong total on Fix It and every row of both answer keys is read from the same numbers that draw the page. There is no second, hand-typed key. On a near double the wrong Fix It totals of one more and one fewer are the two doubles either side, so a child who grabs a double is close but not right, and gets it right by checking, not by guessing "no."
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, every answer box, the tracker, class grid, team note and home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader; the frames, counters and cut pieces are always printed. Every page also prints clean in black and white: the gold triangle and the dashed ring differ by shape, not color. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
First grade teachers, special education and resource room teachers, interventionists, and anyone who needs doubles and near doubles practice at more than one level in one file, with the tracking and family pages already made.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
An untimed practice set for doubles and near doubles, with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed fluency probe or a goal page, not a full math curriculum, and not a claim about any student's age, grade level or rate of progress. Doubles go up to 10 + 10 and near doubles up to 9 + 10; 11 + 11 and beyond are not in the file.
