About this resource
Equivalent fractions on a number line, for third grade: two number lines, one over the other, the same width, with a dot on each. Two fractions, one spot. Children write the equal fraction, draw the matching dot, fill in a missing number, tell same spot from different, and cut and glue. Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction, and boxes and lines made for a child's handwriting. Untimed: no clock, no score on the page.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (28 pages: 12 student pages, 16 for you)
- 17 different pairs of equal fractions on stacked number lines from 0 to 1, in halves, thirds, fourths, fifths, sixths, eighths and tenths, all computed in code
- Look: one pair worked on two lines and one fill-in worked step by step (1 page)
- Two Names: both lines have the dot; write the equal fraction. Set A prints the bottom number, Set B writes both (8 items, 2 pages)
- Mark and Match: the dot is on the top line; draw it straight down and write its name (4 items, 1 page)
- Fill In: an equal fraction with a blank top or bottom number, with bare lines to work on (8 items, 2 pages)
- Same Spot?: two dots on two lines, circle same spot or different (8 items, 4 of them the same spot, 2 pages)
- Names for One Half: five lines with the dot at one half, write a name for each (4 blanks, 1 page)
- Cut and Glue: six pieces a page in a 3 by 2 block, three straight cuts; fractions glued to lines, lines glued to fractions, and fractions glued to equal fractions (18 pieces, 3 pages)
- 3 answer keys (17, 16 and 18 rows), a tracker, a class grid, a team note, a home page with blank lines and boxes for the family to fill in, a filled example (an invented student), a phrase and strategy bank (17 starters), a binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label
- Start Here, a how-it-works page and a "What's next" back page
Built For The Child, Not The Office
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture (a pencil or scissors), rounded boxes at least half an inch tall, and plenty of room. Everything for you (directions, answer keys, scoring) is on separate teacher pages. No clip art: the only pictures are the number lines themselves.
Three Levels, Marked By Dots
One dot: starting (both dots are drawn, or the dot is at one half). Two dots: building (draw your own dot, fill in a top number, tell same from different). Three dots: ready for more (fill in a bottom number or a blank on the left, close fractions, fifths and tenths). The dots are the only level code, so children at one table are not comparing papers.
Every Item Is Computed
Every dot, tick, answer in the three keys and cut piece is read from the same four numbers (two bottom numbers and two top numbers) that draw the page, and the code only draws two fractions as equal when it has checked that they are equal. There is no second, hand-typed key. Where an answer sits is placed by a seeded shuffle that rejects any order a child could guess.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, every answer box, the tracker, class grid, team note and home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader. Mark and Match and Same Spot? ask for a pencil dot or a circle, so they are made to print; the printed boxes and cut pieces are always printed. Every page also prints clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Third grade teachers, fourth grade teachers who need a refresher, special education and resource room teachers, interventionists, and families who want the same method at home, with the tracking and home pages already made.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
An untimed practice set for seeing equal fractions as one point with two names on a number line, with the record-keeping around it. It covers fractions between 0 and 1 only. It is not a timed fluency probe or a goal page, not a full fractions curriculum, and not a claim about any student's grade level or rate of progress. There is no comparing, ordering, adding, simplifying or mixed numbers.
