About this resource
Teaching exponent rules and need more than one chart and one activity? This is a complete unit for grades 8-9 on simplifying with exponents: the product rule, the quotient rule, a power to a power, a power of a product, the zero exponent and negative exponents. Students read the six rules and fill in a try-it blank for each, study worked examples with a guided copy to fill in, name the rule, then simplify with real room to show their work, one rule at a time and then mixed. Find-the-mistake pages, quizzes, exit tickets and three cut-and-paste sorts finish the unit. Answer keys show every answer.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (48 pages)
- 32 student pages in 16 kinds of page, each with a name line and one short instruction
- 152 scored items on 29 sheets, every answer simplified by program and checked by putting numbers in for the letters
- 2 reference pages: the six rules with a try-it blank each, then a look-for chart that tells which rule to use
- 3 worked-example pages: 6 worked examples with 6 guided copies for students to fill in (product, quotient, power of a power, power of a product, zero exponent, negative exponent)
- 12 Name the Rule problems on 2 sheets: write the number of the rule, then simplify
- 66 one-rule problems on 11 sheets: product 12, quotient 12, power of a power 12, power of a product 12, zero exponent 6, negative exponents 12
- 18 mixed-review problems on 3 sheets: two rules in one problem, then more variables and negative exponents
- 8 Find the Mistake problems on 2 sheets (an invented student's work, one mistake each)
- 1 Make Your Own page with 3 prompts
- 12 quiz items on 2 quizzes; 6 exit tickets on 2 sheets; 1 self check (8 statements)
- 18 cut-and-paste pieces on 3 cut-and-paste sorts (6 pieces into 3 boxes each: sort by rule, sort by rule again, sort by the answer they simplify to)
- 5 answer key pages; 1 tracker, 1 class grid, 1 team note, 1 family page
- 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (17 starters in 6 groups)
- Start Here and a how-to-read-a-page page
Built For The Student Holding The Page
A "My name" line, one short instruction with a small picture cue, and a plain scalloped border. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult: the keys and records are on separate teacher pages. Every problem has a ruled work box and an answer box. Exponents are raised and fractions are stacked, the way they print in a textbook. Clip art is kept to a lightbulb, a question mark and a pencil. The file prints clean in black and white.
Invented Examples
Every expression and every student is made up for practice and says so. The filled example names an invented student.
Type In, Or Print
The name line, every answer box, every check box and every ruled work box are type-in fields in any PDF reader: click one, type, then save. You can also print any page. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
An exponent rules practice set with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed test, a screener, a clinical tool, or a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. There is no IEP goal language or eligibility wording anywhere in the file, and it does not claim to match any one state's standards: there is a line on the tracker for your own.
