About this resource

20 original stories for reading out loud, each on its own page with the exact word count printed on it, four questions with room to write, and a box for you to fill in the seconds, the mistakes, the words per minute and the accuracy. The stories run from 60 words to 130 words, so you can start a reader on a short one and move up. It comes with answer keys, a tracker, a graph the child colors, a class log, a team note and a home page, so there is nothing to make yourself.

How To Use It

What The Stories Are

Short stories about everyday things: a kite, a snow day, a bake sale, a lemonade stand, a lost mitten, a museum trip. A few are simple facts about bees, beavers, the water cycle and thunder. Every story is written for this file. There are no real people, no characters you will recognize from a book or a show, and no quotation marks.

What Is Not Included

There are no norms, no benchmarks and no target numbers anywhere in the file: it never says what a words-per-minute number should be. It is not a screener, a placement test or a clinical tool, and it says nothing about any child's age or rate of progress. The stories are listed from shorter to longer; the listing does not claim a reading level for any one of them.

Built For The Child Holding The Page

A big "My name" line, one short instruction, large rounded type, and answer boxes tall enough for a child to write in. The shorter stories are set in bigger type. The file prints clean in black and white.

Type In, Or Print

The name line, every answer box, the teacher box, the tracker, the class log, the team note and the home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader: click one, type, then save. The same pages print and write by hand. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
