About this resource

Fractions on a number line, for third grade: a fraction is a point, found by counting equal parts. This file teaches it and practices it with halves, thirds, fourths, sixths and eighths on lines from 0 to 1 and, on some pages, 0 to 2, at three levels. Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction, and lines and boxes made for a child's handwriting. Untimed: no clock, no score on the page.

EVERYTHING INSIDE (29 pages: 13 student pages, 16 for you)

Built For The Child, Not The Office

Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture (a pencil or scissors), rounded boxes at least half an inch tall, and plenty of room. Everything for you (directions, answer keys, scoring) is on separate teacher pages. No clip art: the only pictures are the number lines themselves.

Three Levels, Marked By Dots

One dot: starting (the bottom number is printed, or the line is on 0 to 1 with halves, thirds or fourths). Two dots: building (write both numbers, place a fraction, draw your own marks). Three dots: ready for more (sixths and eighths with the labels left off, lines that run past 1). The dots are the only level code, so children at one table are not comparing papers.

Every Item Is Computed

Every dot, every tick, every label, every answer in the three keys and every cut piece is read from the same three numbers (bottom number, top number, and whether the line runs to 1 or 2) that draw the page. There is no second, hand-typed key. Where an answer sits (the dot on a line, the piece under a mat cell, which labels are blank) is placed by a seeded shuffle that rejects any order a child could guess.

Type In, Or Print

The name and date lines, every answer box, the tracker, class grid, team note and home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The Place the Fraction and Make the Parts pages ask for a pencil dot or mark, so they are made to print; the printed boxes and cut pieces are always printed. Every page also prints clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file.

Who This Is For

Third grade teachers, fourth grade teachers who need a refresher, special education and resource room teachers, interventionists, and families who want the same method at home, with the tracking and home pages already made.

What This Is, And What It Is Not

An untimed practice set for finding and naming fractions on a number line, with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed fluency probe or a goal page, not a full fractions curriculum, and not a claim about any student's grade level or rate of progress. It covers halves, thirds, fourths, sixths and eighths only; there are no mixed numbers, no decimals, no comparing or adding fractions and no equivalent-fraction pages (two fractions on the same page may name the same point, and that is left for you to talk about).
