About this resource
Groundhog Day math for second and third grade: two-digit adding and subtracting with regrouping, shadows to measure and draw on a true-size inch ruler, word problems, a tally and a bar graph, secret words and cut and glue. Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction, and boxes made for a child's handwriting. Answer keys, a tracker and a filled example are included. Untimed: no clock, no score on a student page.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (36 pages: 19 student pages, 17 for you)
- 50 different two-digit problems (25 adds that carry, 25 subtracts that trade), all computed in code, none repeated anywhere in the file
- Look: one add, one subtract and one shadow measured, worked step by step (1 page)
- Add It: carry in a small box (Set A, 4 problems) and with no helper boxes (Set B, 6 problems) (2 pages)
- Subtract It: trade a ten in small boxes (Set A, 4 problems) and with none (Set B, 6 problems, including a top number that ends in 0) (2 pages)
- Shadow or Sun: 6 mixed problems; more than 50 circles the shadow picture, less than 50 circles the sun (1 page)
- Measure the Shadow: a ruler under every shadow. Set A whole inches (4 shadows), Set B half inches (4 shadows), Set C two shadows and how much longer one is (3 pairs) (3 pages)
- Draw the Shadow: draw a shadow of a given length with the ruler, including half inches (4 shadows, 1 page)
- Word Problems: 6 invented stories, two to a page, a 1.5-inch "Show your work" box under each (3 pages; the last page has a three-number story)
- Tally It: count tally marks in a pretend town, compare and add (1 page)
- Graph It: color a bar graph from three numbers, then answer 3 questions (1 page)
- Secret Word: solve 6 problems, find each answer in a code, spell a word (2 pages; the code has letters that are not in the word, so the word cannot be guessed by crossing letters off)
- Cut and Glue: six answers cut out and glued on the problems, in a 3 by 2 block, three straight cuts (12 pieces, 2 pages)
- 4 answer keys, a tracker (18 scored pages, 82 items), a class grid, a team note, a home page, a filled example (an invented student), a phrase and strategy bank (17 starters), a binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label
- Start Here, a how-it-works page and a "What's next" back page
Built For The Child, Not The Office
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture (a pencil, a book or scissors), a drawn groundhog, rounded boxes at least half an inch tall, and plenty of room. Everything for you (directions, answer keys, scoring) is on separate teacher pages. All the art is drawn by us.
Three Levels, Marked By Dots
One dot: starting (small carry and trade boxes, whole inches). Two dots: building (no helper boxes, half inches, mixed problems). Three dots: ready for more (comparing and drawing lengths, a three-number story, a harder code). The dots are the only level code, so children at one table are not comparing papers.
The Rulers Are True Size
Every ruler is drawn so that one inch on the page is one inch on your ruler when you print at 100 percent (the file says so on page 4 and how to check it). Each shadow starts at the 0 mark and ends on a tick, drawn from the same number the answer key uses.
Every Number Is Computed
Every problem, every shadow length, every tally mark, every bar, every code letter, every cut piece and every answer in the keys is read from the same numbers that draw the page. There is no second, hand-typed key. No problem repeats anywhere in the file, and every answer on a cut-and-glue page is different.
A Note On The Theme
In the tradition, people watch to see whether a groundhog sees its shadow. This file uses only the pictures: a groundhog, its shadow and the sun. Nothing in it says what a groundhog does or what the weather will be. The shadow is for the math.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, every answer box, the tracker, class grid, team note and home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader. Circling, coloring the graph, drawing a shadow and the cut pieces are made to print. Every page also prints clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Second and third grade teachers, special education and resource room teachers, interventionists, and families who want the same practice at home, with the tracking and home pages already made.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
An untimed practice set for two-digit regrouping, measuring to the half inch, word problems and simple graphs, with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed fluency probe or a goal page, not a full math curriculum, and not a claim about any student's grade level or rate of progress. It stays within 100: there are no three-digit numbers, no multiplication and no fractions.
