About this resource

Read a word. Find it in the key. Color the square. A picture shows up! This is a Halloween-themed color-by-sight-word kit for early readers: six Halloween mystery pictures, each a grid with a sight word in every square and a color key, plus the warm-up, sentence, writing and record-keeping pages around them. The words come from the Dolch Pre-Primer and Primer lists. Every student answer is colored or written in crayon or pencil, so no student page needs scissors or glue.

EVERYTHING INSIDE (32 pages)

The Five Page Types

1. Practice heart (one dot): read the word, find it in the key, color the box. A small heart is hiding in the squares, so a child sees the whole idea before the first mystery picture.

2. Get Ready: trace each key word, then write it in a box with a dashed guide line. The words are grouped by the color they will get, so the child meets them before they are in the squares.

3. Mystery Picture: read each word, color its box like the key. Squares start white and the picture shows up when every square is colored.

4. Read and Color: six sentences a page, such as "I see a black bat." Read it, then color the blank outline of the picture to match.

5. Name the Picture: the six finished pictures, a word bank, and "I see a ___." to write.

Words That Make A Child Read

Every word is in only one color on a page. No color's words are all the same length or all start with the same letter, so a child cannot color by length. The same word never touches itself, up, down, left or right. The six color words in the Dolch lists (red, blue, yellow, black, brown, white) are left out of the squares: a square that says red and has to be colored blue would be a trick, not reading. All of this is checked in code when the file is built.

Built For The Child Holding The Page

A big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture, large rounded letters, and squares big enough for a crayon. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult, and the level is dots, not words. The color names are printed in the key, so the pages still work when photocopied in black and white. The pictures are ordinary Halloween props — a pumpkin, a ghost, a bat, a spider, a witch hat, a moon — with no scary detail, gore or character costumes.

A note on the pictures: each is a simple pixel drawing. If a child gives one a different name, say the word yourself; the Name the Picture page has a word bank for that.

Type In, Or Print

The name and date lines, the tracker, the class grid, the team note, the home page and the binder cover are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The words a child writes in the boxes are crayon or pencil work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.

Who This Is For

Kindergarten and first grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher working with an older student who still needs first sight words, for the October / Halloween season. The home page sends the same job to a family; the team note hands off what changed since the last meeting.

What This Is, And What It Is Not

Sight word reading practice with the record-keeping around it. The word lists are this store's typed-in Dolch Pre-Primer (40 words) and Primer (52 words) lists. It is not a probe, a goal bank or a score sheet, not a reading assessment, and not a claim about any student's age or rate of progress.
