About this resource
Halves and fourths, on pages a child can pick up and start. Tell equal parts from unequal parts, color a half or a fourth, name the colored part, split shapes with lines, spot a wrong word, or cut and glue. Every page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction, and big shapes with room to work. Untimed: no clock, no score on the page.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (35 pages: 19 student pages, 16 for you)
- 97 practice items on 17 scored student pages, plus Look Together and Draw Your Own; no practice item repeats across student pages
- Look Together: halves, fourths, equal parts and not equal on four picture cards, with "a fourth is also called a quarter" (1 page)
- Equal or Not: circle the shapes with equal parts, put an X on the others; the cuts get closer in size and the equal parts start to look different, like a square cut corner to corner (18 items, 3 pages)
- Color the Parts: color 1 half, then 1 fourth, then the number of parts the words say: 1 half, 1 fourth, 2 fourths or 3 fourths (18 items, 3 pages)
- Name the Parts: circle half or fourth; circle "1 of 2 equal parts," "1 of 4 equal parts" or "not equal parts"; then write how many parts are colored and how many equal parts in all (18 items, 3 pages)
- Split It: trace the dashed lines, join the matching dots, then draw the lines yourself two ways (15 items, 3 pages)
- Fix It: a printed word (half, fourth or quarter) that is right on 5 rows and wrong on 5; circle yes or no and give the right word (10 items, 2 pages)
- Cut and Glue: six pieces a page; shapes to words, words to shapes, and shapes to labels (halves, fourths, not equal); 18 pieces in all, 3 pages
- Draw Your Own: draw a shape, split it into equal parts, color one part, write how many parts (3 boxes, 1 page)
- 94 shapes cut into parts, every one drawn in code: 79 with equal parts (37 in halves, 42 in fourths) and 15 with parts that are not equal
- A shape guide, 2 answer keys (54 rows and 43 rows), a 17-row tracker, a class grid, a team note, a home page with three practice shapes, a filled example (an invented student), a phrase and math-talk bank (17 starters), a binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label
- Start Here, a how-it-works page and a "What's next" back page
Every Equal Part Is Really Equal
Every shape is a circle, a rectangle or a square, cut by straight lines that run all the way across. The file works out the size of every part: a shape drawn as equal has parts of exactly the same size, and a shape drawn as not equal has a smallest part under four fifths of the biggest, so a child can see the difference. The file will not build if a picture and its numbers disagree. Halves and fourths only: there are no thirds.
Built For The Child, Not The Office
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture (a pencil, a circle, a book or scissors), rounded cards, and answer boxes at least half an inch tall. Split It C and Draw Your Own have big empty shapes and boxes to draw in. Everything for you (directions, answer keys, scoring) is on separate teacher pages.
Three Levels, Marked By Dots
One dot: starting (cuts that are easy to see, printed lines to trace, one part named for the child). Two dots: building. Three dots: ready for more (parts that are close in size, halves that look different, writing the numbers, drawing the lines yourself). The dots are the only level code, so children at one table are not comparing papers.
Cutting That Is Easy
Cut and Glue A and C have six pieces in a 3 by 2 block, three straight cuts, no gaps, every piece 2.2 by 1.3 inches. Cut and Glue B is one strip of six word pieces, each 1.22 by 1.3 inches. No piece sits under its own kind of box on the cut page, so cutting straight across and gluing straight down never gives the answers.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, every answer box, the tracker, class grid, team note and home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader; the shapes and cut pieces are always printed. Every page also prints clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten, first and second grade teachers, special education and resource room teachers, interventionists, and anyone who needs halves and fourths practice at more than one level in one file, with the tracking and family pages already made.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
An untimed practice set on halves, fourths and equal parts, with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed probe or a goal page, not a full math curriculum, and not a claim about any student's age, grade level or rate of progress. Circles, rectangles and squares only.
