About this resource

An improper fraction and a mixed number are two names for the same amount. This file teaches the trip both ways and practices it: count shaded fraction bars, draw them, divide and use the remainder, then multiply and add to go back. Three levels. Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction, and answer boxes made for a child's handwriting. Untimed: no clock, no score on the page.

EVERYTHING INSIDE (31 pages: 15 student pages, 16 for you)

Built For The Child, Not The Office

Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture (a book, a pencil, a circle or scissors), rounded answer boxes at least half an inch tall, and plenty of room. Divide B has a big work room under the problems. Shaded parts are hatched, so they still show on a black-and-white printer. Everything for you (directions, answer keys, scoring) is on separate teacher pages. No clip art: the only pictures are the fraction bars themselves.

Three Levels, Marked By Dots

One dot: starting (the picture or the frame is printed, and the bottom number is printed). Two dots: building (count the bars, draw them, fill in, find a wrong answer). Three dots: ready for more (divide with no frame, find the error going back to an improper fraction). The dots are the only level code, so children at one table are not comparing papers.

Every Item Is Computed

Every top number, whole number, left over, shaded bar, wrong answer on the Find the Error pages, step on the cut-and-order strips and row of the three answer keys is read from the same three numbers that draw the page (whole number, left over, bottom number). There is no second, hand-typed key. Where an answer sits (the letter in a match, right or wrong, the piece under a mat box, which number a Fill In hides) is placed by a seeded shuffle that rejects any order a child could guess. Each wrong answer on Find the Error has one slip (the left over off by one, one whole too many, a changed bottom number, a forgotten left over, or the whole number and top number added), and the key says which.

Type In, Or Print

The name and date lines, every answer box, the tracker, class grid, team note and home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader; the printed bars and cut pieces are always printed. Shading the bars on Draw the Bars is done with a crayon or pencil on the printed page. Every page also prints clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file.

Who This Is For

Fourth grade teachers, fifth grade teachers reviewing fractions, special education and resource room teachers, interventionists, and families who want the same method at home, with the tracking and home pages already made.

What This Is, And What It Is Not

An untimed practice set for writing the same amount as an improper fraction and as a mixed number, with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed fluency probe or a goal page, not a full fractions curriculum, and not a claim about any student's grade level or rate of progress. Every bottom number is 2 to 8; there are no whole-number answers, no simplifying and no adding or subtracting mixed numbers.
