About this resource
"Every day Ben jumps. Yesterday Ben jumped. Right now Ben is jumping." Children learn -s, -ed and -ing best when the sentence tells them which one to use. This is a full word-endings kit for first and second grade: every sentence starts with a time word to read, and the child adds the ending, sorts by it, circles it or writes it, on primary handwriting lines with room to work.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (36 pages)
- 19 student pages in 8 page types (below), each with a big "My name" line and one short instruction
- 18 base words with -s, -ed and -ing (54 written forms): jump, look, paint, call, rest, pack, walk, help, lift, ask, fill, start, kick, play, melt, pick, work, land
- 12 more words that change their spelling, in a clearly separate Ready for More set: bake, race, wave, smile, dance, like (drop the e) and hop, tap, clap, hug, skip, stop (double the letter), 36 written forms
- 54 printed practice sentences (18 Choose, 12 Picture, 18 Write, 6 spelling) and 18 cut-and-glue words
- 6 action pictures drawn for this pack: jump, walk, kick, paint, lift, melt
- 1 word key (all 18 words, every form, and which words say t, d or ed), 1 spelling-rules page, 2 answer keys
- 1 tracker (18 words), 1 class progress grid, 1 team note, 1 home page, 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (16 starters)
- 1 binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label to cut out
- Start Here, a how-to-read-a-page page, and a back page
THE EIGHT PAGE TYPES (dots show the level, never color)
1. Endings Helper (1 dot) — Every day goes with -s, Yesterday with -ed, Right now with is goes with -ing, shown with a drawn picture, plus a strip on how -ed can sound like t, d or ed.
2. Add the Ending (1 dot, 3 pages) — the base word is printed faintly in a writing box; the child adds -s, -ed or -ing.
3. Sort by Ending (2 dots, 3 pages) — cut six words from a 3 by 2 block (three straight cuts) and glue each under -s, -ed or -ing.
4. Choose the Ending (2 dots, 3 pages) — read the sentence, circle the one real word that fits.
5. Picture Sentences (2 dots, 2 pages) — the same choice, with a drawn picture of the action.
6. Write the Word (3 dots, 3 pages) — the base word sits in a chip; the child writes the form on primary lines.
7. Ready for More (3 dots, 3 pages) — Drop the e, Double the Letter, and Right Spelling (circle the correct spelling).
8. My Sentences (3 dots, 1 page) — pick a verb, write three sentences that start Yesterday, Every day and Right now, and draw one.
Words come in three sets of six (A, B, C), so a child never meets the same word twice on one kind of page.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture, large rounded letters, and writing boxes on primary lines at least half an inch tall. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult. Cutting is limited to Sort by Ending: six pieces a page, touching edge to edge, each wider than 2 inches and taller than 1.
The Spelling Changes Are Kept Separate
The first 18 words only ever add the ending. Words that drop the e or double a letter wait in Ready for More, and a teacher page explains both changes with every form listed. The page leaves a blank line for the rule wording your program uses.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the tracker, the class grid, the team note, the home page and the spelling-rules note box are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The letters a student writes in the boxes are pencil work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
First and second grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher working with an older student who still needs -s, -ed and -ing. The home page sends the same job to a family; the team note hands off what changed since the last meeting.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Word-endings practice with the record-keeping around it. It is not a probe, a goal bank or a score sheet, not a reading assessment, and not a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. Words that add -es, change y to i, or change in other ways (run, ran) are not practiced.
