About this resource
Measurement worksheets for kindergarten and first grade, on pages a child can pick up and start. Circle the longer one, the shortest one, the taller one; write 1 on the shortest and 2, 3 after it; count how many cubes long an object is; color that many cubes or draw a worm that long; cut and glue lengths in order. Every page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction, and boxes made for a child's handwriting. Untimed: no clock, no score on the page.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (34 pages: 19 student pages, 15 for you)
- 87 scored items on 17 pages, all computed in code
- Look: the words longer, shorter, taller, longest and shortest on drawn examples, and one object on a row of cubes (1 page)
- Longer and Shorter: objects lie left to right from one line; A circles the longer of two, B circles the shortest of three, C reads a word (longest or shortest) and circles that one (13 items, 3 pages)
- Taller and Shorter: objects stand on one ground line; A circles the taller of two, B the tallest of three, C reads the word, four to a card (14 items, 3 pages)
- Put in Order: write 1 for the shortest, then 2, 3; sets of 3, 4 and 5 (14 sets, 3 pages)
- How Many Cubes: an object lies on a row of cubes; write how many cubes long; rows of 10, 12 and 14 cubes (17 items, 3 pages)
- Make a Length: color that many cubes of a row of 14; draw a worm that many cubes long over a row of 12 (11 items, 2 pages)
- Cut and Glue: 18 pieces on 3 pages; numbers glued by rows of cubes (6 pieces), six pictures glued in order shortest first (6 pieces), six standing pictures glued in a row shortest on the left (6 pieces)
- My Measuring: measure three things with your own cubes; draw each one, write a guess and the measure, then draw the longest and the shortest (1 page)
- 2 answer keys (17 cards, one for every scored page), a tracker (17 rows), a class grid (15 student rows, 6 columns), a team note, a home page with three pairs to compare and two things to measure, a filled example (an invented student), a phrase and measuring-talk bank (17 starters in 5 groups), a binder cover, and 6 divider tabs with a spine label
- Start Here, a how-it-works page and a "What's next" back page
Built For The Child, Not The Office
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture (a pencil, a book, a circle or scissors), big drawn objects, and rounded answer boxes at least half an inch tall. Make a Length has a big drawing box over each row of cubes; My Measuring has a drawing box for everything measured. Everything for you (directions, answer keys, tracking) is on separate teacher pages.
Three Levels, Marked By Dots
One dot: starting (two objects that are far apart, rows of 10 cubes, color the cubes). Two dots: building (three objects, four to a set, rows of 12, draw a worm). Three dots: ready for more (four objects with a word to read, sets of five, rows of 14, heights glued in order, measure real things). The dots are the only level code, so children at one table are not comparing papers.
Every Length Is Drawn To Scale, And Every Answer Is Computed
Nothing is a picture of a length. Each object is drawn a whole number of cubes long at one fixed cube width for its page, and code checks that the drawn length equals the number of cubes times that width. Objects that are compared start on one line (lying objects are left-aligned, standing objects stand on one ground line), and no two objects that are compared are ever within one cube of each other, so the answer is never a judgment call. Every "longer", "shortest" and "tallest" answer is worked out from the drawn lengths, the numbers to write on Put in Order are worked out by ranking them, and the answers are spread across the positions on each page. On How Many Cubes the object ends exactly on a cube line, and there is no ruler: no numbers, no inch marks, nothing printed on a row of cubes. The child counts. On the cut-and-glue pages no piece sits under its own box, so cutting across and gluing down never hands over the answer.
Easy Cutting
Every cutting page has six pieces that touch edge to edge, so each cut is one straight line: two 3 by 2 blocks (three cuts each) and a strip of six (five cuts). Every piece is over an inch on each side, and the pictures inside the pieces are drawn with solid lines, so the only dashed lines on a piece are the ones to cut on.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, every answer box, the tracker, class grid, team note and home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader; the objects, cube rows, drawing boxes and cut pieces are always printed. Every page also prints clean in black and white: nothing depends on color, and no length is a color. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten and first grade teachers, special education and resource room teachers, interventionists, and anyone who needs comparing, ordering and cube-measuring practice at more than one level in one file, with the tracking and family pages already made.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
An untimed practice set for comparing lengths, ordering them and measuring with cubes, with the record-keeping around it. It uses cubes as the only unit and has no ruler. It is not a timed fluency probe or a goal page, not a full math curriculum, and not a claim about any student's age, grade level or rate of progress. Objects go up to 18 cubes long on the lying pages and 16 on the standing pages; the cube rows hold 10, 12 and 14 cubes.
