About this resource
Teaching measurement with nonstandard units and want pages your K-2 students can do on their own? This set has 23 student sheets that measure with cubes and paper clips. Every object is drawn exactly as long as the cubes or paper clips under it, so a child can line up at the start line, count to the dashed end line and be right. Each page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a small picture, big objects and a big answer box. Print and go, or type the answers into the PDF.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (34 pages)
- 23 student sheets with 89 things to do
- 1 measure-the-right-way sheet: a worked row, then 3 rows where the child puts an X on the one measured right (no gaps, no overlaps, start at the line)
- 8 sheets with 32 objects to measure: count the cubes or paper clips drawn under the object (4 sheets), or read a ruler of 10 cubes or 7 paper clips up to the dashed end line (4 sheets)
- 2 sheets with 8 objects measured two ways, in cubes and in paper clips
- 3 compare sheets with 9 pairs: which is longer, which is shorter, and how many more cubes
- 3 order sheets with 6 sets of 3 objects, shortest to longest or longest to shortest, in cubes and in paper clips
- 4 cut-and-glue sheets with 22 cut pieces: sort pictures with cube bars into shorter than, the same as and longer than 5 cubes, and glue the number of cubes or paper clips
- 2 measure-the-room sheets with 11 spaces to draw and record what the child measured with real cubes or paper clips
- 14 different objects, such as a toothbrush, a fork, a school bus, a carrot and a pencil, each lying on its side
- Three answer-key sheets, a tracker with a filled example (an invented student), a family page for measuring at home, Start Here and a What's Next page
Three Levels
A small shape in the top corner of each student page tells you the level: a circle (7 sheets) is starting, with the units drawn under the object; a square (8 sheets) is building, with a ruler to read to a dashed line or two units to compare; a triangle (7 sheets) is ready for more, with bigger numbers and how many more.
How It Works
1. Do the measure-the-right-way page together first.
2. Print a page at the level your student needs and hand it over. One short instruction, one job.
3. Check with the key and write the date and score on the tracker.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, big print, a border and room to write. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult; the keys and tracker are on separate teacher pages. The cutting pages have 5 or 6 big pieces edge to edge, so each cut is one straight line.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
