About this resource
Five part-whole skills. Every one of them printed three times, at three levels of support, with
the WHOLE printed on every single box — at Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3, on every skill in the
pack. Nothing here hides the whole and asks a child to reconstruct it; the missing piece is
always the part.
Fifteen cut-and-paste worksheets in one PDF, each with its own scripted lesson-plan page in
front of it — the objective, a word-for-word script, what each level gives the student, and what
to say when they get stuck. A teacher, a para or a sub can pick this up cold on a Monday morning
and run it.
How The Three Levels Work
Level 1 — the fewest boxes, and on the bond skills the known part is tinted so the student can
see exactly what they already have. There are exactly as many pieces on the strip as there are
blanks, so there is no wrong piece to pick up.
Level 2 — more boxes and one extra piece on the strip that belongs to nothing on the page, so
the student has to reject something instead of matching everything. The tint is gone.
Level 3 — the most boxes, nothing tinted, facts out of order rather than in a tidy sequence.
Use this level as your progress-monitoring page.
The level is shown on the child's sheet as a color tone and a row of dots and nothing else, so the
three levels look the same on the desk.
The Five Skills
1. Two Parts Make a Whole — a whole shown as two counted groups, the whole printed above them
2. Missing Part to 5 — small bonds, the everyday starting point
3. Missing Part to 10 — the same skill, bigger wholes (six through nine)
4. Number Bonds for 10 — the whole is always ten, including five-and-five
5. Make a Ten — a ten-frame with some already filled; how many more make ten
WHY WHOLE=10 NEVER APPEARS ON SKILLS 2 OR 3
A whole of ten is its own skill, with its own page, right after these two. Keeping it out of
"Missing Part to 5" and "Missing Part to 10" means a student can be checked on wholes up to nine
before being asked to recall the ten facts specifically, instead of both blurring
together into one big pool of numbers.
What Is In The File
- 26 pages, one PDF
- 15 worksheets (5 skills x 3 levels)
- 5 scripted lesson-plan pages, one per skill — objective, word-for-word script, what each level
gives the student, what to do when they get stuck
- 1-page teacher guide to the three levels, with what to do when a student is stuck
- 2 pages of answer keys, with every spare Level 2 piece named
- Name and date line and a scissors rule line on every worksheet
- Clear, child-friendly print throughout, every numeral a student reads set at cut-card size, and no page
that depends on color to be understood: the jar frame and the counters are drawn in heavy black line, so a
grayscale copy works exactly as well as a color one and there is no separate B&W file
- The level is shown on the child's sheet as a color tone and a row of dots and nothing else: no student page
says "Level 1" in words a child reads, so the three levels look the same on the desk
What A Page Looks Like
Every worksheet is one jar with the skill on its lid and the bonds inside it, and the cut pieces
stand in a column beside the jar at a size a six-year-old can cut and hold. The whole, the parts and
the cards are all set at the same large size, so nothing a child has to read is small print.
Who This Is For
Self-contained, resource and intervention classrooms, and any K-1 room teaching part-part-whole
before or alongside fact fluency. Also a progress-monitoring set: a clean Level 3 on Bonds for 10
in March beside a Level 1 in October is a data point you can put in a report.
Pairs With
Subtraction Within 10 Cut and Paste — the take-away half of this same set, same three levels,
whole visible on every page. Doubles and Near Doubles Progress Monitoring Probes — the
fact-fluency measurement step after bonds are taught. Blends Cut and Paste — same page anatomy,
same three levels.
