About this resource
Addition and subtraction on a number line, hop by hop. Hop forward to add, hop back to subtract, or read the printed sign and tell the two apart. Every page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction, and an answer box made for a child's handwriting. Untimed: no clock, no score on the page.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (24 pages: 8 student pages, 16 for you)
- The whole 0 to 20 number line on every page, with every hop arc drawn to scale (one tick-width each, so arcs never overlap) — tested at the full range and the widest hop count before any page was written
- 38 number-line problems, every start number, hop count and direction different, all computed in code
- Ways to Use a Number Line: the ring, the hops, the landing dot, forward and back, plus a Your turn strip (1 page)
- Addition Hops: read the printed hops, draw your own hops, or find the missing hop count (14 items, 3 pages)
- Subtraction Hops: the same three ways, hopping back (14 items, 3 pages)
- Mixed Hops: addition and subtraction on the same page; the printed sign says which way to hop (10 items, 2 pages)
- 2 answer keys, 1 tracker, 1 class grid, 1 team note, 1 home page with a printed number line and blank equations for the family to fill in, 1 filled example (an invented student), a phrase and strategy bank (16 starters), a binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label
- Start Here, a how-it-works page and a "What's next" back page
Built For The Child, Not The Office
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture (a pencil), rounded boxes at least half an inch tall, and plenty of room. Everything for you (directions, answer keys, scoring) is on separate teacher pages.
Three Levels, Marked By Dots
One dot: starting (the hops and the landing dot are printed; the child reads where it lands). Two dots: building (the child draws the hops). Three dots: ready for more (the hop count itself is missing, or the direction is the child's own to choose). The dots are the only level code, so children at one table are not comparing papers.
Every Number Is Computed
Every start number, hop count, direction and answer is read from the same triple that draws the page. There is no second, hand-typed key. A seeded shuffle keeps the order from ever reading as a pattern (no run of ascending, descending, or three in a row).
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, every answer box, the tracker, class grid, team note and home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader; the number line itself is always printed. Every page also prints clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF, not a slideshow or a word-processor file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten through 2nd grade teachers, special education and resource room teachers, interventionists, and anyone teaching a child to use a number line for both operations, with the tracking and family pages already made.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
An untimed number-line practice set with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed fluency probe or a goal page, not a full math curriculum, and not a claim about any student's age, grade level or rate of progress.
