About this resource
A tens-and-ones kit for kindergarten through second grade: reading base-ten blocks, building a number
from scratch, writing expanded form, working a place-value table, and a quick three-choice check — five
genuinely different ways to practice the same skill — plus the record-keeping a classroom or small group
needs around it.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (30 pages)
- 30 Count the Blocks items across 5 pages — teen numbers (11-19), tens only (no ones left over), then
three sets of full two-digit numbers to 99
- 10 Build the Number targets across 2 pages — a blank mat of tens and ones outlines; the reverse
direction of reading a picture, including single-digit and multiple-of-ten edge cases
- 12 Expanded Form items across 2 pages — fill in tens + ones = the number, first with a base-ten
picture, then with the number alone
- 20 Tens and Ones Table rows across 2 pages — write the digits for a given number, or build the number
from a given tens/ones count
- 12 Circle the Matching Number items across 2 pages — a base-ten picture and three number choices; the
two wrong choices are computed on purpose (a digit swap, and one ten off), never a random guess
- 3 answer keys, generated from the same numbers every worksheet uses
- 1 practice tracker (one student, five formats), 1 progress snapshot (a bar graph rolling the five
scores into one picture), and 1 class grid (whole class), type-in or print
- 1 family update — a note home with blanks for the week's formats and the district's own wording
- 1 home practice page — a second, self-contained practice set for a family to use together, with no
school materials needed
- 1 filled example — an invented student, every number checked against its own table
- 1 phrase bank — progress-note, family-note, next-step and talk-first starters
- 1 binder cover with a spine label and six divider tabs
- Start Here, a how-it-works page, and a contents page that gives every page number
Every Tens/Ones Split Computed, Never Typed
Every tens-and-ones split in this file — on a worksheet page, an answer key, or the filled example —
comes from dividing the number by 10 in code. The two wrong choices on the Circle the Matching Number
pages are computed the same way: a digit swap (writing the digits in the wrong order) and one ten off,
the two mistakes place value most often catches — never a random distractor.
Five Ways To Practice
Count the Blocks reads a picture and writes the number. Build the Number goes the other way: given the
number, mark tens and ones on a blank mat. Expanded Form asks for tens + ones = the number, with or
without a picture. The Tens and Ones Table works the same split as rows of digits. Circle the Matching
Number is a quick check against two computed mix-ups.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the answer lines, the tracker, the snapshot, the class grid, the family update
and the home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader; every base-ten block is always printed, never
typed. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten through second-grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any small group
working on tens and ones below or above grade level.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
A tens-and-ones practice set with the record-keeping around it. It is not a full math curriculum, not an
assessment, and not a claim about any student's age, grade level or rate of progress. The tracker has a
blank line for your own scoring criteria.
