About this resource
Teaching Punnett squares and need pages students can actually fill in? This is a complete set for grades 6-8 built around the grid. Students match eight genetics words (gene, allele, dominant, recessive, genotype, phenotype, homozygous, heterozygous), turn genotypes into looks, and learn the four steps with a worked grid and one of their own. Then they fill 8 one-gene grids across four pages, write genotype and look ratios, answer six chance questions, fill incomplete-dominance grids, and try a two-gene cross with a 16-square grid and an 8-square grid. Two sorts, true or false, three cut-and-paste mats, six short answers with room for at least four lines each, a design-your-own-cross page and a twelve-item quiz finish the set. Every plant and animal is invented (Moonvine, Tumblebug, Flurb, Glimmerfin, Zibbit, Pinkle bush, Spriggle, Quibble) and the pages say so. There are no human traits and no health data anywhere in the file.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (40 pages)
- 25 student pages in 14 kinds of page, each with a name line and one short instruction
- 128 scored items spread over 21 sheets, every answer in the key computed from the parent genotypes
- Genetics Words: match 8 words to their meanings, with 2 extra meanings not used
- Read the Code: 8 genotypes to turn into a look (including a pink Pinkle bush)
- How to Fill a Punnett Square: 4 steps, 1 worked grid, 1 practice grid with 2 questions
- 4 one-gene pages with 8 blank 2 by 2 grids and 2 questions each, plus a written question on each page
- Ratios From the Grid: 4 crosses, 8 ratios to write; What Are the Chances?: 6 questions (fraction, percent, expected number)
- Incomplete dominance on two sheets: 4 blank grids and a yes-or-no question
- Two genes at once on two sheets: one 16-square grid (gametes to write, 4 looks to count) and one 8-square grid
- Genotype or Phenotype? (12 items), Homozygous or Heterozygous? (12 items) and True or False (6 sentences, plus 2 fix-it boxes)
- 18 cut-and-paste pieces on 3 mats (match the word, homozygous or heterozygous, match each ratio to its cross), 6 pieces each in a 3 by 2 grid
- 6 short-answer questions, at least 4 ruled lines each; Design Your Own Cross (invent a trait, fill a grid, write the ratios)
- 12-item quiz across two sheets; 1 self check (8 statements)
- 4 answer keys with every grid filled in; 1 tracker, 1 class grid, 1 team note, 1 family page
- 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (17 starters in 6 groups)
- Start Here and a how-to-read-a-page page
Built For The Student Holding The Page
A "My name" line, one short instruction with a small picture cue, a plain scalloped border and big grids with room to write in every square. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult: the keys and records are on separate teacher pages. The cut pages have six pieces in a strip-and-grid layout, edge to edge, so there are only a few straight cuts. Clip art is kept to a pea pod, a lightbulb, a question mark and a pencil. The file prints clean in black and white.
Textbook Genetics, Invented Organisms
The pages cover complete dominance, incomplete dominance and a simple two-gene cross, the way a middle school life science unit does. Every organism is made up for this file. A Punnett square shows chances, not promises, and the pages say so. Check the wording against your own textbook; no alignment to any standard is claimed.
Type In, Or Print
The name line, every answer box, every check box, every ruled work box and every empty square in every grid are type-in fields in any PDF reader: click one, type, then save. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
A set of genetics practice pages with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed test, a screener, a clinical tool, or a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. There is no IEP goal language or eligibility wording anywhere in the file, and no human health information.
