About this resource
Before a child can write a vowel's bossy-r spelling, they first have to know that two of the five
sound different from each other and three of them do not — and most bossy-r worksheets never say
so out loud. This pack does. Four skills, one bossy-r job each, three levels of every single one.
Skill 1 is a true listening task: ar and or are two different sounds, the same way this store's
Beginning Sound Sort Cut and Paste pack's own beginning-sound pairs are, so "say the picture, listen, glue the letters you heard" is fair.
Skills 2 and 3 are not a listening task, and they say so on the plan page: er, ir and ur all spell
the exact same sound, so the word is printed with only its bossy-r spelling cut out, and the job is
to remember or check that specific word's spelling — a word-completion task, not a guessing game
dressed up as one. Skill 4 sorts picture cards into letter-team houses, the same cut-and-paste shape
as the rest of this store's sort packs.
How The Three Levels Work
Level 1 — a tinted box showing exactly where the piece goes, and no spare piece to account for.
Level 2 — the same pictures or words, no tint, and one spare piece: an extra copy of a spelling
already in play, so a student who counts the pieces instead of reading/listening gets the page
wrong.
Level 3 — no tint, no spare (Skill 1) or a new set of words for a second look (Skills 2–3); the
sort's own Level 3 gives one house a second card instead of widening the split, since this
catalog's or/ir pictures run thin — see "What this is, and what it is not" below.
The Four Skills
1. Bossy R: AR or OR — a fair listening task (these two sounds are genuinely different)
2. ER, IR or UR: One Sound, Three Spellings — the word is printed with its spelling missing; this
is a spelling-memory task, told to the student plainly, never disguised as a listening one
3. Review: All Five Spellings — the same word-completion mechanic, three of the five spellings at
a time, so every one comes up again by the end of the skill
4. Sort by Spelling — picture cards into letter-team houses, four houses (ar, or, er, ir) — see why
below
What This Is, And What It Is Not
A print-and-cut worksheet packet with a scripted plan page in front of each skill. It is not a
fillable form, not a full curriculum, and not a claim that every bossy-r spelling can be sorted by
ear — er, ir and ur cannot, and this packet never pretends otherwise. The final sort (Skill 4) uses
four houses, not five: this store's picture catalog has no second clean picture for ur beyond the
one used in the word-completion skill (a turkey, where the printed letters — not the bare picture —
carry the answer), so ur is taught in Skills 2–3 and reviewed there, not sorted as a bare picture.
Nothing here is a timeline, an eligibility claim or a clinical conclusion — every objective is
written the way a classroom goal is written.
What Is In The File
- 27 pages, one PDF
- 4 scripted lesson plan pages — a script in quotation marks a substitute could read cold, three
level notes, three "if a student is stuck" tips with the likely cause named, a try-it-today idea
and a data box on every plan
- 12 student worksheets (4 skills x 3 levels)
- 2 pages of answer keys, recomputed from the same data that draws the worksheets
- 1 filled example page — an invented student's completed word-completion page, so you can see
exactly how the "spelling, not sound" mechanic works before any student touches one
- 1 progress roll-up page that turns all four skills into one sheet for an IEP meeting or a team
check-in
- 1 family-and-team update page — blanks for what you saw and what's next, plus three ways to help
at home, with no clinical language anywhere on it
- 1 binder cover and 1 page of 4 divider tabs plus a spine label, so this drops straight into a
binder, a hanging file or a bin of folders
- 1-page "how to use this packet" guide that states plainly which skills are a listening task and
which are a spelling-memory task
- A name and date line, a big direction line and a cut rule on every worksheet
- Every cut piece sits edge to edge with its neighbor (one straight cut between pieces, never a
gap), at least five pieces on every page, in one or two short rows
- No level word and no teacher note anywhere on a student page: the three dots on the name line are
the only level code, and they are there for you, not for the child
Who This Is For
Self-contained, resource and early-intervention classrooms, and any 1st-2nd grade room moving past
short vowels into vowel-r combinations. It works alongside this store's Middle Sound Sort Cut and
Paste pack (same shape, the middle short vowel instead) and the R-Controlled Vowels Progress
Monitoring Probes, for ongoing data once this skill is taught.
