About this resource
Looking for read and write decimals practice that your fourth and fifth graders can do on paper, with room to write? This set has 16 student sheets for the one job: say a decimal, write it as a number, write it in words, and write it as parts that add up. Students put digits in place value columns, write numbers in word form and words as numbers, write standard form as expanded form and back, work with thousandths and the zeros inside them, and cut and glue to match words, numbers and expanded forms. Every sheet has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a small picture, big numbers and big boxes to write in. Print and go, or type the answers on screen.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (30 pages)
- 1 reading sheet: two worked examples (0.375 and 12.84) in place value columns, each written three ways, then one number to try
- 4 place value and word-form sheets: write each digit in its column (6 numbers), read the columns and write the number and the place of a ringed digit (6), number to words (6), words to number (8)
- 6 expanded form and thousandths sheets: number to expanded form (6), expanded form to number (6), thousandths to words (6), words to thousandths (6), the multiplying form with a digit in each box (5), the same number three ways (5)
- 3 cut-and-match sheets, 6 pieces each: glue the words by the number, glue the number by the words, glue the expanded form by the number
- 1 blank template (5 rows: a number, its columns, its words and its expanded form) and 1 words sheet with a word box and 6 sentence frames
- 2 answer-key sheets, a tracker with a roll-up graph (13 scored sheets, 78 problems), a filled example (an invented student), a family sheet, a binder cover with a spine strip, 3 divider tabs, a Start Here sheet and a What's Next sheet
Three Levels
A small shape in the top corner of 13 student sheets tells you the level: a circle (4 sheets) is starting, with tenths and hundredths; a square (4 sheets) is building, with the thousandths place and expanded form; a triangle (5 sheets) is ready for more, with zeros inside the number, the multiplying form and the same number three ways. The reading sheet, the blank template and the words sheet carry no level shape.
How It Works
1. Pick a section: place value, words and numbers; expanded form and thousandths; or cut, match, glue and talk.
2. Print a sheet and hand it over. One short instruction, one job. Students write in the boxes or cut and glue.
3. Check with the key, write the date and score on the tracker, and color the roll-up column.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, big print, boxes big enough for a child's handwriting, and room to write. On the cutting sheets the pieces sit edge to edge in a strip of two rows of three, so a child makes as few cuts as possible, and each glue box is the size of its piece. Nothing on a student sheet is written for an adult; the keys, tracker and notes are on separate teacher sheets. Every number is made up. Every word form is written by one function and read back into a number, every expanded form is added back to its number, and every answer in the key comes from the same numbers as its sheet.
