About this resource
Teaching the Revolutionary War and need the battles in one place, with a map and a timeline students can work on? This is a complete set for grades 6-8: a battle map with a symbol key, seven short readings (Lexington and Concord, Bunker Hill, Trenton, Saratoga, Valley Forge, Cowpens and Yorktown), two timelines, a sort, a find-the-evidence page, short answers, a claim-evidence-reasoning paragraph, a quiz and three cut-and-paste mats. Each reading has a main idea box, an example box and two checks to answer with a letter. Answer keys give the letters, the years and a sample for every open answer.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (49 pages)
- 30 student pages in 15 kinds of page, each with a name line and one short instruction
- 113 scored items spread over 22 of the student sheets, every answer taken from the same lists that print on the page
- 3 map pages on an outline of the eastern United States with a compass rose, a mile scale and a symbol key: study the map (7 battle sites), match a clue to a spot on the map (7 items), and read directions and distances (6 items) that are measured from the same points that draw the dots
- 7 readings of 155 to 167 words, one per battle, each with a main idea box and an example box (3 ruled lines each) and 2 checks (14 checks in all)
- 1 Before You Read page with 4 true-or-false items and 1 Before and After Check (6 questions answered before the unit and again after it)
- 1 Words to Know page (match 8 words) and 1 Who Was There? page (match 8 people to what they did)
- 2 timeline pages with 9 events each: write the year for each, then number the events in order
- 1 Battle Facts Chart (a row for each of the 7 battles), 1 Which Battle? sort (8 clues) and 1 Find the Evidence page (8 numbered sentences, 4 questions)
- 9 short-answer questions across three pages, 4 ruled lines each
- 2 claim-evidence-reasoning pages: an organizer and an 18-line paragraph page
- 12-item quiz across two pages; 1 self check (8 statements)
- 18 cut-and-paste pieces on 3 mats, 6 pieces each in a 3 by 2 grid: match the battle, before or after the Declaration of Independence, and a dated timeline from April 1775 to October 1781
- 6 answer keys with a sample for every open answer; 1 tracker, 1 class grid, 1 team note, 1 family page
- 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (17 starters in 6 groups)
- A binder cover with type-in teacher and class fields, and a page of divider tabs (Maps, Readings, Timelines, Quiz, Keys) with a spine label to cut out
- Start Here and a how-to-read-a-page page
Built For The Student Holding The Page
A "My name" line, one short instruction with a small picture cue, a plain scalloped border and big ruled boxes. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult: the keys and records are on separate teacher pages. The map states are colored only to tell them apart, and the map symbols differ in shape as well as color (a star, a square, a diamond and a triangle), so the map still reads in black and white. The flag, cannon, rowboat, calendar and hat are drawn by us in a flat style. The cut pages have six pieces in a strip-and-grid layout, edge to edge, so there are only a few straight cuts.
A Short Account, Not A Full Textbook
Each reading is a plain-words summary of one battle, written for this file, with rounded numbers and textbook facts such as the dates, the commanders and how each fight ended. It does not quote any source and it is not tied to a particular standard. The map is a simplified outline, not a survey. Check it all against your own textbook. The only student in the file is an invented example, and it says so.
Type In, Or Print
The name line, every answer box, every check box and every ruled work box are type-in fields in any PDF reader: click one, type, then save. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
A set of battle readings, map pages and a timeline with the record-keeping around it. It covers the battles and the order of the war, not why the war began. It is not a timed test, a screener, a clinical tool, or a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. There is no IEP goal language or eligibility wording anywhere in the file, and no claim of alignment to any standard.
