About this resource
Teaching citizenship and need pages students can read, sort, match and write on? This is a complete set for grades 6-8: two short readings (school and community, then the nation), word work, two cut-and-paste sorts, scenario pages, find the mistake, two quizzes and a teacher section, with answer keys.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (39 sheets)
- 24 student sheets in 16 kinds of sheet, each with a name line and one short instruction
- 92 scored items on 13 scored sheets
- Words to know: 8 words with their meanings and two lines to write your own sentence for each
- 2 readings of 150 and 154 words (rights and responsibilities at school and in the community; rights and responsibilities of citizens of the United States), each with 3 checks (6 in all) and a writing box of at least 4 lines
- Word work: 8 words to match to meanings, 8 sentences to fill from a word bank, and 2 true-or-false sheets (16 sentences) with a box to rewrite a false one
- 2 cut-and-paste sorts, 12 pieces each in a 4 by 3 grid (24 pieces): a right or a responsibility, and where it happens (school, community or nation)
- 1 sheet of 12 scenario cards to cut out and talk over with a partner, with two writing boxes
- 2 match sheets, 6 pairs each (12 in all): match each right to a responsibility that goes with it
- 3 scenario sheets, 3 scenarios each (9 in all), "what would a responsible citizen do?", each with a ruled box of at least 4 lines
- 1 find-the-mistake sheet (4 sentences by an invented student) , 1 chart (a right and a responsibility for home, school, community and nation), 1 my-responsibilities organizer

- Start Here and a how-to-read-a-sheet page
Built For The Student Holding The Page
A "My name" line, one short instruction with a small picture cue, a plain scalloped border and big ruled and answer boxes. Every ruled writing box has at least 3 lines. Nothing on a student sheet is written for an adult: the keys and records are on separate teacher sheets. The cut sheets have 12 pieces in a 4 by 3 grid, edge to edge, so there are only a few straight cuts. There is no clip art: the file is plain type, boxes and borders, written for older students, and it prints clean in black and white.
General Ideas, Not A Local Rule
Each reading is a plain-words summary written for this file, in the way a middle school civics unit teaches the basics: freedom of speech, freedom of religion and a fair trial as rights, and obeying laws, paying taxes, serving on a jury when called and respecting other people's rights as responsibilities. It does not quote any source, it does not say what your state or district requires, and it is not tied to a particular standard. Where a local rule belongs, the sheet has a blank line to write it on. Check the readings against your own textbook. The only students in the file are invented, and each says so.
Type In, Or Print
The name line, every answer box, every check box, every ruled work box and the chart cells are type-in fields in any PDF reader: click one, type, then save. The cut sheets are for a pencil and scissors: they print. Print at 100 percent so the pieces stay the size they are drawn. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
A set of rights and responsibilities pages and readings with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed test, a screener, a clinical tool, or a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. There is no IEP goal language or eligibility wording anywhere in the file, and no claim of alignment to any standard.
