About this resource
A self portrait template set for PreK, kindergarten, first and second grade, and for self-contained and resource classrooms. Children get four blank portrait pages to draw on (two with a head outline, two without), a finished example next to a blank to copy from, a labeled face-parts page at three levels, two draw-and-write pages and a cut-and-glue face craft. Every student page has a big My name line and one short instruction with a picture, so a paraprofessional can run the table from the page itself. No prep beyond printing and cutting.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (18 pages)
- 1 Start Here page: what is inside, a five-day plan (one activity a day), the three levels, and prep
- 4 blank portrait pages: an oval head outline, a head and shoulders outline, a round mirror frame and a picture frame with a name plate (2 with a head outline, 2 without)
- 1 look-and-draw page: a finished example child (invented and drawn) next to a blank head and shoulders, with two lines to write about hair and eyes
- 4 face-parts pages at three levels: read and color (8 parts, words printed), glue the words (8 glue boxes plus 1 page of 8 word pieces to cut), and write the words from a word bank
- 2 draw-and-write pages: All About Me (a drawing box and three sentence starters) and Things I Like (4 drawing boxes with handwriting lines)
- 1 face craft page: a head with 8 glue targets, each the same size as its piece, with a faint twin inside
- 1 craft piece page: 2 eyebrows, 2 eyes, 2 ears, a nose and a mouth to color, cut and glue, with the finished model shown
- 1 Who Did What This Week class data page with a key to where each face part is
- 1 family letter with a try-it-at-home mirror activity
- 1 credits page
Three Levels, Marked With Shapes
The face-parts task comes at three levels, marked with a circle, a square and a triangle instead of a number, so children at one table are not comparing papers.
Cutting Built For Small Hands
Both cutting pages carry 8 pieces edge to edge in a grid, so each cut is one straight line. Word pieces are 1.75 by 1.1 inches and craft pieces are 1.5 inches on a side. The craft's glue targets are the same size as the pieces.
How To Use It
Day 1, look at the example and draw a self portrait. Day 2, name the parts of the face and do the face-parts page at each child's level. Day 3, draw and write. Day 4, make the face craft. Day 5, display the portraits and let each child tell about theirs.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
A print-and-cut PDF: print on regular paper, card stock for the cutting pages if you like. It is not a fillable PDF and it is not Google Slides or a PowerPoint file. The faces are original drawings; the decorative children on the cover, Start Here, family letter and credits pages are Whimsy Clips art and the fonts are KA Fonts; the file is secured so the art cannot be lifted out of it.
Who This Is For
PreK, kindergarten and 1st-2nd grade teachers, and any special education teacher setting up an all-about-me or back-to-school week for a self-contained or resource room with draw, label, write and craft stations.
