About this resource
Nine silent-e skills. Every one of them printed three times, at three levels of support, so the whole room can work the same page at the same time.
Twenty-seven cut-and-paste worksheets in one PDF. The cut strip sits on the same page as the work, so nothing gets separated on the way to the desk. Nothing in here is seasonal, so it prints in September and it prints in April.
How The Three Levels Work
Level 1 — two or three pictures. The short-vowel word is printed in full and the empty box sits at the end, tinted. Every piece on the strip is an e, so there is no wrong piece to pick up.
Level 2 — four pictures and five pieces. The tint is gone and one piece belongs to nothing on the page, so the student has to reject something instead of matching everything.
Level 3 — six pictures and no tint, no model, no guarantee. On the adding-the-e page half the pieces now say NO E, so the student has to decide whether the word needs one at all.
Both Halves Of Every Pair Are Drawn
cap and cape. can and cane. tap and tape. pin and pine. cub and cube. tub and tube. Six true minimal pairs, and both sides of every one of them is a picture, so a student is never asked to compare a picture with an idea. The six short-vowel drawings come out of the CVC pack in the same hand at the same weight, so nothing about the drawing tells a student which side of the pair they are looking at.
That is also why the list stops at six. kit/kite and hop/hope are in every silent-e programme, and neither "kit" nor "hop" can be drawn as a picture a five-year-old will name correctly. A page that used them would have to fake one half of the pair, so this pack does not use them. kite appears, but only where its word is printed.
The Page That Catches The Real Error
Students who have the rule and not the exception put an e on the end of everything. The Level 3 adding-the-e page is built for exactly them: the three-letter word printed in the frame is the same for both members of a pair — cap for the cap and cap for the cape, pin for the pin and pin for the pine — and three of the six pieces say NO E. Nothing on the page says which is which except the picture.
The Nine Skills
1. Adding the silent e — cap becomes cape
2. Short vowel or long? — sorting mats for the vowel the e changes
3. Reading the pair — two words side by side, one picture under each
4. Choosing the right word — the picture first, then the word
5. Building silent-e words from four letter tiles
6. Matching the word to the picture
7. Reading the word and choosing the picture
8. Sorting onto a_e, i_e, o_e and u_e mats
9. Building the whole word from its first letter and a printed rime
Why The Spare Piece Cannot Be Forced In
Every Level 2 strip has one leftover, and none of them can be made to fit. On the adding-the-e page it is an o, and pino, cubo, tubo and kito are not words. On the word-building page it is a g, and gane, gike, gube and gose are not words. Checked one by one, not assumed.
About The Pictures
A picture a child could name three ways is a broken phonics item. Every picture on a page that prints no word has one obvious name — cap, cape, can, cane, pin, pine, cub, cube, tub, tube, cake, gate, bike, kite, slide, rose, bone, cone, flute, hat, pig, wig. The ones that could go two ways (the tap, the dime, the mule, the robe, the stove, the roll of tape) only appear where the word is printed beside them.
What Is In The File
- 41 pages, one PDF
- 27 worksheets (9 skills x 3 levels)
- 6 colour section dividers for your binder
- 1-page teacher guide to the three levels, with what to do when a student is stuck
- 3 pages of answer keys, with the spare Level 2 piece named on every line
- Name and date line and a scissors rule line on every worksheet
- Black-line art with a colour accent on the level banner only, so a grayscale copy works exactly as well as a colour one. There is no separate B&W file because you do not need one.
Who This Is For
Self-contained, resource and intervention classrooms, and any elementary room with a wide reading range in it. Also a progress-monitoring set: a clean Level 3 in March beside a Level 1 in October is a data point you can put in a report.
Pairs With
CVC Words Cut and Paste (the short-vowel step before this one), Blends Cut and Paste, and Digraphs Cut and Paste — same page anatomy, same three levels, same picture style.
