About this resource

Teaching Spanish cognates and need pages students can actually work on? This is a complete set for grades 6-8 built around five endings that give cognates away. Students learn what a cognate is, read a cheat sheet for -ción/-tion, -idad/-ity, -oso/-ous, -ante/-ant and -ista/-ist, then write the English word for 8 Spanish words on each ending's own page. Two short Spanish stories (46 and 51 words) are written for this set so students can find cognates in real sentences. Then they match Spanish words to English words, meet ten false friends (falsos amigos) such as sopa, éxito and librería, choose the real meaning in a sentence, check off 32 I Spy words and write the English beside each, translate 8 short Spanish sentences into English with three ruled lines each, and sort Spanish words with three cut-and-paste mats. A quiz, a self check and four answer keys finish the set.

EVERYTHING INSIDE (39 pages)

Good For

A warm-up on the first day of a Spanish unit, a sub plan, early finishers, newcomer or heritage-speaker practice, or a station. The endings pages and the I Spy pages work on their own, so you can pull one page for a quick check.

Built For The Student Holding The Page

A "My name" line, one short instruction with a small picture cue, a plain scalloped border and big boxes with room to write. The Spanish words are printed big, with their accents, so a student can copy them. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult: the keys and records are on separate teacher pages. The cut pages have six pieces in a strip-and-grid layout, edge to edge, so there are only a few straight cuts. The file prints clean in black and white.

Common Words, Not A Full Course

The words are common cognates with the usual English matches, and the false friends are well-known ones. The two stories are written for this file. Words can differ from region to region, so check any word against the Spanish your class uses. The student in the filled example is invented, and the page says so.

Type In, Or Print

The name line, every answer box, every check box and every ruled work box are type-in fields in any PDF reader: click one, type, then save. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.

What This Is, And What It Is Not

A set of Spanish vocabulary practice pages with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed test, a placement test, a screener, a clinical tool, or a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. There is no IEP goal language or eligibility wording anywhere in the file, and no claim of alignment to any standard.
