About this resource
Every story has four parts: a setting, characters, a problem and a resolution. This is a full story-elements kit for 1st and 2nd grade, with three practice formats that build from finding to sorting to inventing: first reading a short invented story and writing all four parts, then cutting and sorting story-part cards into four bins, then composing an original part when given the other three.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (23 pages)
- 8 student pages in 3 page types plus a Helper page (below), each with a big "My name" line and one short instruction
- 3 invented short stories (2-4 sentences each), every one stating its setting, characters, problem and resolution outright, in plain words
- 24 story-part cards across 2 cut-and-sort pages (12 a page: 3 per bin, 4 bins), edge-to-edge in a 4-by-3 grid
- 2 answer keys generated from the same stories and card banks as the pages, plus a model answer and two criteria for every Write Your Own item
- 1 tracker (16 rows), 1 team note, 1 home page, 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (21 starters)
- 1 binder cover and divider tabs (5 tabs plus a spine label) that drop straight into a classroom binder
- Start Here, a how-to-read-a-page page, a definitions page with blanks for your program's own wording, and a back page
THE THREE PAGE TYPES (dots show the level, never color)
1. Story Parts Helper (1 dot) — setting, characters, problem and resolution, side by side, in kid words
2. Read and Find the Story Parts (1 dot, 3 pages) — read a short story, write the four parts
3. Sort the Story Parts (2 dots, 2 pages) — cut story-part cards and glue them into four bins
4. Write Your Own (3 dots, 2 pages) — given three story parts, invent the fourth
Every one of the four story parts is the missing part on exactly one Write Your Own item, so every part gets practiced as the "write it" slot, not just read as a given.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction, large rounded letters, and space to write. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult. Cutting is limited to Sort the Story Parts: 12 pieces a page in a 4-by-3 grid, edge to edge, each wide enough to read and glue.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the tracker, the team note, the home page and the definitions page note box are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The lines a student writes on are pencil work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
1st and 2nd grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher working with an older student who still needs this skill. The home page sends practice stories to a family; the team note hands off what changed since the last meeting.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Story-elements practice with the record-keeping around it. It is not a probe, a goal bank or a score sheet, not a reading assessment, and not a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. Stories with more than one problem, and any theme or moral a child would have to infer, are not practiced — every story states its four parts outright. Write Your Own is checked against two plain-language criteria per item, never a single right-answer key.
