About this resource
Subtraction within 20, on pages a child can pick up and start. Hop back on a number line, count back, cross out drawn pictures in ten-frames, find a missing part, spot a mistake, or cut and glue. Every page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction, and answer boxes made for a child's handwriting. Untimed: no clock, no score on the page.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (34 pages: 18 student pages, 16 for you)
- 79 different subtraction facts, every start from 11 to 20 and every number taken away from 1 to 9, all computed in code; each fact appears on exactly one student page
- Ways to Subtract: one fact shown four ways (count back, number line, ten-frame, think addition) (1 page)
- Number Line Hops: a 0 to 20 number line with a tick and a numeral at every number; hops are printed, or the child draws them, or finds the start first (12 problems, 3 pages)
- Count Back: write each number you say counting back, 1 to 3 steps (12 problems, 2 pages)
- Take Away: 216 drawn pictures in ten-frames to cross out, or crossed out for the child to write the subtraction, or with a "My work" box (14 problems, 3 pages)
- Missing Part: a bar of two parts and a whole, a ten-frame under the missing part on the first page, and the think-addition line (13 problems, 3 pages)
- Fix It: a printed answer that is right on 4 rows and wrong on 6; circle yes or no and write the right answer (10 problems, 2 pages)
- Cut and Glue: six pieces a page, 3 by 2, three straight cuts; answers to facts on two pages, facts to answers on the third (18 pieces, 3 pages)
- Draw Your Own: pick a number, draw it, cross some out, write the subtraction (1 page)
- A fact map of all 90 facts showing which page each one is on, 2 answer keys (38 rows and 41 rows), a tracker, a class grid, a team note, a home page with a printed number line and three practice facts, a filled example (an invented student), a phrase and strategy bank (17 starters), a binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label
- Start Here, a how-it-works page and a "What's next" back page
Built For The Child, Not The Office
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture (a pencil, a book, a circle or scissors), rounded boxes at least half an inch tall, and plenty of room. Take Away C and Missing Part C add a "My work" box. Everything for you (directions, answer keys, scoring) is on separate teacher pages.
Three Levels, Marked By Dots
One dot: starting (hops are printed, pictures to cross out, a ten-frame under the missing part, a faint answer in the glue box). Two dots: building. Three dots: ready for more (draw the hops yourself, show your work, fix a mistake). The dots are the only level code, so children at one table are not comparing papers.
Every Fact Is Computed
Every answer, every hop, every crossed-out picture, every wrong answer on Fix It and every row of both answer keys is read from the same pair of numbers that draws the page. There is no second, hand-typed key. Every wrong answer on Fix It is one more, one fewer, or the two numbers added, so a child gets it right by checking, not by guessing "no."
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, every answer box, the tracker, class grid, team note and home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader; the pictures, number lines, ten-frames and cut pieces are always printed. Every page also prints clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
First and second grade teachers, special education and resource room teachers, interventionists, and anyone who needs subtraction practice at more than one level in one file, with the tracking and family pages already made.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
An untimed subtraction practice set with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed fluency probe or a goal page, not a full math curriculum, and not a claim about any student's age, grade level or rate of progress. Facts start at 11: there is no subtraction within 10 in this file.
