About this resource
Is "large" the same as "big"? Is "quick" the opposite of "slow"? This is a complete set of synonym and antonym worksheets for grades 2-4, built for the table where children need different amounts of support. Children match words, circle the word that means the same or the opposite, decide whether a pair is the same or opposite, fill in the missing word from a box with spare words, cut and paste words onto sort mats, and write pairs of their own. It comes with two answer keys, a tracker and a family page, so nothing has to be written from scratch.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (25 pages)
- 13 student pages in 7 page types: Same or Opposite? (a look page and two sets of pairs), Match the Words (two pages), Circle the Word (two pages), Fill It In (two pages), Cut and Paste (three pages) and Write Your Own
- 80 scored items on 11 pages, every answer read from the data that draws the page, never typed by hand
- 24 cut-and-paste pieces on 3 sort mats (8 pieces each), each into two labeled boxes
- 2 answer keys, generated from the same data as the student pages
- 1 tracker (page, page type, items right, date) and 1 home page
- 1 filled example (an invented student)
- 1 binder cover and 7 divider tabs plus a spine label (8 cut pieces, straight cuts), to organize this resource in a teacher binder
- Start Here and a how-to-read-a-page page
The Page Types
1. Same or Opposite? look page (1 dot): two big boxes that say what synonyms and antonyms are, with three example pairs in each, then five answer boxes for the child to write words that mean the same, opposites, and a pair of their own.
2. Match the Words, 2 pages (1 or 2 dots): six words, each with an answer box for a letter, and a lettered box of eight words. Set A asks for the word that means the same; set B asks for the opposite. Two words in each box are spares.
3. Circle the Word, 2 pages (1 or 2 dots): eight words with three choices each. Set A: circle the word that means the same. Set B: circle the opposite.
4. Same or Opposite? pairs, 2 pages (2 or 3 dots): eight pairs of words on each page. Circle Same or Opposite. Four pairs of each kind on every page.
5. Fill It In, 2 pages (2 or 3 dots): six short sentences and a box of nine words, six used and three spare. Set A: write the word that means the same. Set B: write the opposite.
6. Cut and Paste, 3 pages (1, 2 or 3 dots): a big two-box mat and a block of 8 pieces that touch edge to edge, so cutting is a few straight lines. Paste 1 sorts word pairs into Same and Opposite; Paste 2 sorts words into "Same as big" and "Opposite of big"; Paste 3 sorts words into "Same as happy" and "Opposite of happy".
7. Write Your Own (3 dots): write a word that means the same for two words, the opposite for two more, then write a sentence on ruled lines and draw it.
One Right Answer Per Row
On the match, circle and fill-in rows, each word has exactly one answer in its box. Words that have several well-known partners (such as hot or loud) are kept out of those rows. A box never holds both kinds: a same-meaning page has no opposites among its answers, and the reverse. The only place a word has several partners is the sort mat built on one target word (big, happy), where the two boxes are "same as" and "opposite of" that word.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction, large rounded type, big answer boxes, and dots (not words or colors) to show which level a page is. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult. The last page has writing lines and a drawing box, so there is room to work. There are no pictures: every page is words in boxes, and the pages print clean in black and white.
No Guessing The Answer
Wherever a child picks among printed spots (which letter answers a row, which choice is right, which pairs are the same or opposite, the order of the pieces on the cut strip), the position of the right answer is checked so it does not sit in the same spot three times in a row.
Type In, Or Print
The name line, every answer box and every writing line are type-in fields in any PDF reader: click one, type, then save. The same goes for the tracker and the home page. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Second, third and fourth grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher who wants a vocabulary center, a small group or a morning work folder on synonyms and antonyms.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
A set of synonym and antonym worksheets with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed test, a screener, a clinical tool, or a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. There is no IEP goal language or eligibility wording anywhere in the file.
