About this resource
Synonyms are words that mean the same thing. Antonyms are words that mean the opposite. This is a full synonyms-and-antonyms kit for first and second grade, with every page type working on one skill at a time: first matching pairs, then choosing from options, then sorting. The two word banks stay completely separate so the skill stays clear.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (30 pages)
- 15 student pages in 6 page types (below), each with a big "My name" line and one short instruction
- 24 synonym pairs and 24 antonym pairs, all invented and grade-appropriate; no pair repeats twice within one page type (the same pair IS reused on purpose across Match and Circle, so the same words get practiced two ways)
- Synonyms practiced: happy/glad, big/large, start/begin, over/above, small/tiny, and others
- Antonyms practiced: hot/freezing, up/down, heavy/light, near/far, on/off, and others
- 2 cut-and-sort pages with mixed synonym and antonym words
- 2 answer keys generated from the same data as the pages
- 1 tracker (16 rows), 1 team note, 1 home page, 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (20 starters)
- 1 binder cover and 6 cut-out divider tabs plus a spine label, to organize this resource in a teacher binder
- Start Here, a how-to-read-a-page page, a definitions page with blanks for your program's own wording, and a back page pointing to more resources from the store
THE SIX PAGE TYPES (dots show the level, never color)
1. Synonyms and Antonyms Helper (1 dot) — what are they, side by side, in kid words
2. Match Synonyms (1 dot, 3 pages) — draw lines to match pairs of words that mean the same thing
3. Circle the Synonym (2 dots, 3 pages) — read a word, circle its synonym from four choices
4. Match Antonyms (1 dot, 3 pages) — draw lines to match pairs of words that mean opposites
5. Circle the Antonym (2 dots, 3 pages) — read a word, circle its opposite from four choices
6. Sort Words (2 dots, 2 pages) — cut words and sort them into Synonyms or Antonyms
Word pairs come in three sets of eight (A, B, C), so a child never meets the same pair twice on one page type.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction, large rounded letters, and space to write or draw. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult. Cutting is limited to Sort Words: 16 pieces a page in a 4-by-4 grid, edge to edge, each wide enough to write on. Synonyms and antonyms stay separate on every page so the skill is clear.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the tracker, the team note, the home page and the definitions page note box are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The lines a student draws are pencil work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
First and second grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher working with an older student who still needs to learn synonyms and antonyms. The home page sends practice pairs to a family; the team note hands off what changed since the last meeting.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Synonyms-and-antonyms practice with the record-keeping around it. It is not a probe, a goal bank or a score sheet, not a writing assessment, and not a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. Rhyming words (which sound alike) and multi-meaning words are not practiced. Every page type separates the two word banks so the skill is clear: synonyms stay with synonyms, antonyms stay with antonyms.
