About this resource
Ten more and ten less, on the hundred chart, on pages a child can pick up and start. Read the chart, write the numbers around a middle number, fill in the empty boxes on a whole chart or a piece of one, fix a printed answer, or cut and glue numbers into place. Every page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction, and answer boxes made for a child's handwriting. Untimed: no clock, no score on the page.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (33 pages: 17 student pages, 16 for you)
- 48 ten-more, ten-less questions, every start number different, all computed in code; the chart runs 1 to 100 and no answer leaves it
- Read the Chart: a whole hundred chart with one number ringed; down one row is 10 more, up one row is 10 less (1 page)
- Chart Cross: write 10 less and 10 more around a middle number with its neighbors printed; then in a column with words; then with one number given and two to find (16 problems, 3 pages)
- Write It: "10 more than 47 is" with an arrow, equations like 64 - 10 =, and short stories with a "My work" box (16 problems, 3 pages)
- Fill the Chart: the whole hundred chart with 24 empty boxes, then 36 (2 pages)
- Chart Pieces: a 5 by 4 piece of the chart with a few empty boxes, then many (26 empty boxes in 4 pieces, 2 pages)
- Fix It: a printed answer that is right on 4 rows and wrong on 6; circle yes or no and write the right answer (10 problems, 2 pages)
- Cut and Glue: six pieces a page, 3 by 2, three straight cuts; numbers into a piece of the chart (a faint twin of the answer on the first page, none on the second), then answers to "10 more than" and "10 less than" (18 pieces, 3 pages)
- My Turn: pick a number, write 10 less and 10 more, show how you know (3 problems, 1 page)
- A start number map of the chart showing which page each number is on, 2 answer keys (48 rows, and 8 small charts), a tracker, a class grid, a team note, a home page with a printed hundred chart and three practice questions, a filled example (an invented student), a phrase and strategy bank (17 starters), a binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label
- Start Here, a how-it-works page and a "What's next" back page
Built For The Child, Not The Office
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture (a pencil, a book, a circle or scissors), rounded boxes at least 0.6 inch tall, and plenty of room. The story page has a "My work" box for each story and My Turn has a "Show how you know" box. Everything for you (directions, answer keys, scoring) is on separate teacher pages.
Three Levels, Marked By Dots
One dot: starting (the chart is printed, the neighbors are printed, a faint twin of the answer sits in the glue box). Two dots: building. Three dots: ready for more (the chart is gone, one number is given and the child finds two, a printed answer may be wrong). The dots are the only level code, so children at one table are not comparing papers.
Every Number Is Computed
The hundred chart, every answer, every empty chart box, every wrong answer on Fix It (one step sideways, the wrong way, or two rows), every glue piece and every row of both answer keys is read from the same chart or start number that draws the page. There is no second, hand-typed key. No ten-more or ten-less question repeats across the student pages.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, every answer box, the tracker, class grid, team note and home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader; the chart numbers, arrows and cut pieces are always printed. Every page also prints clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
First grade teachers, special education and resource room teachers, interventionists, and anyone who needs ten more and ten less at more than one level in one file, with the tracking and family pages already made.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
An untimed practice set with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed fluency probe or a goal page, not a full place value curriculum, and not a claim about any student's age, grade level or rate of progress. Start numbers run from 11 to 90, so ten less and ten more always stay on the chart; the numbers 1 to 10 and 91 to 100 are on the chart but are never a start number.
