About this resource

Four Thanksgiving crossword puzzles with real clues, built so a child can read a clue, count the boxes and write the word with a pencil. No pictures to look at: the child reads and thinks. Crosswords 1 and 2 come with a Word Box that lists every answer; crosswords 3 and 4 have clues only. Big squares, small clue numbers, and a "My name" line at the top of every student page. Add two Word Fill-In puzzles, two cut-and-glue Clue Match pages and a Write the Clues page, and there is a full November week of word work, plus the answer keys and the record-keeping around it.

EVERYTHING INSIDE (26 pages)

The Four Formats

1. Crossword (pages 7–10) — read the clue, write the word in the boxes. Crossword 1 (Turkey Day) and Crossword 2 (Fall Table) have a Word Box; Crossword 3 (Thanksgiving Day) and Crossword 4 (Give Thanks) do not. Every clue says how many letters the answer has.

2. Word Fill-In (pages 11–12) — a blank grid and a Word Box grouped by letter count; fit every word in the boxes. Each puzzle has exactly one solution.

3. Clue Match: Cut and Glue (pages 13–14) — six clues, six words to cut out, glue each word in the box under its clue. Six pieces a page, edge to edge in two rows of three: three straight cuts.

4. Write the Clues (page 15) — a finished mini crossword; the child writes a clue for each word, then trades with a friend.

Of the student pages, only the Clue Match pages use scissors (the divider tabs at the back are cut too). Every other student page is pencil work.

The Words

Everyday Thanksgiving and fall words typed into this file's own lists, from pie and corn to cranberry and neighbor. Nothing here claims they match any program's word list or any grade's standards, and nothing in the clues is a history lesson: they are about food, family, the season and being thankful. Every answer is used once across the four crosswords.

Puzzles You Can Trust

Every grid is checked in code, not by eye. At every square where two words cross, the across letter and the down letter are compared and must be the same (31 crossing squares across the four crosswords). The finished grid is read again across and down, and it must give exactly the answers and no accidental word. Every clue sits under the number and direction of its answer with the right letter count, and no clue contains its own answer. The answer keys come from the same data as the puzzles.

Built For The Child Holding The Page

A big "My name" line, one short instruction with a small picture, big squares and words in a rounded font, room to write, and dots (not words) to show which level a page is. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult. Every drawing is ours, and there is no clip art. This is words only: letters, grids and boxes, no pictures to color.

Type In, Or Print

The tracker, the class grid, the team note and the home page have type-in fields in any PDF reader. The letters a student writes in the grid are pencil work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.

Who This Is For

Second, third and fourth grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher working with an older or younger student who is ready to read short clues and write the answers. The home page sends the same job to a family; the team note hands off what changed since the last meeting.

What This Is, And What It Is Not

Thanksgiving crossword practice with the record-keeping around it. It is not a probe, a goal bank or a score sheet, not a reading assessment, and not a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. Crosswords 3 and 4 are there for the child who is ready for no Word Box; nothing says which student a puzzle belongs to.
