About this resource
Possessive 's shows who has something or who it belongs to — the turkey's feather, Theo's pumpkin, the farmer's basket. This is a Thanksgiving-dressed possessive-nouns kit for first and second grade: a child writes 's to make a word possessive, circles the right version of a phrase, adds a missing 's, sorts possessive words against plain plurals, and writes a whole sentence with 's on primary handwriting lines — five page types, easiest to hardest, all plain text (no pictures, so nothing can be misread).
EVERYTHING INSIDE (33 pages)
- 17 student pages in 7 page types: Helper, Add the Apostrophe, Choose the Right One, Fix the Phrase, Sort Possessive or Plural, Write It Right and My Sentences, each with a big "My name" line and one short instruction
- 72 different sentences and phrases across Add the Apostrophe, Choose the Right One, Fix the Phrase and Write It Right (18 each), all invented and short, every noun or name new and Thanksgiving/fall-leaning, no owner repeated on the same page
- 36 words to cut and sort on Sort Possessive or Plural (12 per page across 3 sets, six possessive and six plural each), in a block that takes 5 straight cuts
- 2 answer keys generated from the same data the pages are built from, 1 tracker, 1 class progress grid
- 1 team note, 1 home page, 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (18 starters)
- 1 binder cover and 6 cut-out divider tabs plus a spine label, to organize this resource in a teacher binder
- Start Here, a how-to-read-a-page page, a rules page with a blank line for your district's own wording, and a back page pointing to more grammar resources from the store
THE FIVE PRACTICE PAGE TYPES (dots show the level, never color)
1. Possessives Helper (1 dot) — three cards: what is it, what shows it, what does it mean
2. Add the Apostrophe (1 dot, 3 pages) — six sentences per page: write 's on the word to make it possessive
3. Choose the Right One (2 dots, 3 pages) — six pairs per page: circle the version with 's
4. Fix the Phrase (2 dots, 3 pages) — six sentences per page: add the missing 's
5. Sort Possessive or Plural (2 dots, 3 pages) — 12 words per page to cut (six possessive, six plural): sort into columns
6. Write It Right (3 dots, 3 pages) — six sentences per page: write the whole sentence with 's on primary lines
7. My Sentences (3 dots, 1 page) — pick a word (pumpkin, cousin, grandpa), write a sentence with 's, draw it
Sentences come in sets of six (A, B, C); no owner repeats on the same page.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction with a small icon, large rounded letters, and primary handwriting lines (a top line, a dashed middle line, a baseline) at least 0.5in tall. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult — the level shows as one, two or three small dots, never a word or a color. Sort Possessive or Plural is the only cutting page: 12 pieces in a 4-by-3 grid, edge to edge, each piece over 2in wide and over an inch tall, 5 straight cuts.
Type In, Or Print
The name line, the tracker, the class grid, the team note, the home page and the rules page's wording box are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The lines a student writes on (the apostrophe, a circled answer, a whole sentence) are pencil work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
First and second grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any older student still building this skill, with a Thanksgiving/fall theme for a November unit. The home page sends three practice prompts to a family; the team note hands off what changed since the last meeting, with blanks for your program's own wording.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Possessive-'s practice with the record-keeping around it, dressed for the season. It teaches only singular possessive nouns with 's (the turkey's feather, Theo's pumpkin); plural possessives (the turkeys' feathers), possessive pronouns (his, hers, theirs) and possessive adjectives (my, your, our) are left out on purpose. It is NOT a Google Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file, not a timed probe, not a data collection sheet, and not a claim about any real student. Example students are invented and labeled as invented on the page; no health or identifying information is pre-filled anywhere.
