About this resource
A Thanksgiving would you rather set for first, second and third grade: 16 question cards with two pictures each, vote pages, "I would rather... because..." writing frames, a partner page and class graphs. Cut the cards apart, read one out loud, and let every child pick, vote and say why. There is no right answer on any page. Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction, and room to write. Untimed: no clock, no score on the page.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (28 pages: 13 student pages, 2 cut pages, 12 for you, plus the cover)
- 16 question cards on 2 cut pages, 8 to a page. Every card has two pictures and two choices, such as find a red leaf or find an acorn. The cards sit edge to edge: three cuts across and one down (pages 4-5)
- Ask and Mark: 2 pages with a number, two pictures and a tally box for each pick, 16 questions in all (pages 7-8)
- Circle One: 3 pages with two big pictures to circle, then "I would rather" and "because" on writing lines (pages 9-11)
- Because: 3 pages with two pictures, "I would rather", "because" and "Also," on writing lines (pages 12-14)
- Make Your Own: draw two things, write your own question, then pick one and tell why (page 15)
- Ask a Partner: 3 rounds with boxes to check for each pick and two writing lines for what the partner said (page 16)
- Class Graph: one page with two columns of 10 boxes to color, and one page with three questions and a bar of 10 boxes for each pick (pages 17-18)
- Because Words: 8 big words and a place to write a sentence (page 6)
- 1 question list with all 16 questions and where each one appears, 1 tracker (12 rows), 1 class grid, a family note, a home page where a child asks someone they know, a filled example (an invented student), a phrase bank (16 starters), a binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label
- Start Here and a "What's next" back page
Built For The Child, Not The Office
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture, rounded boxes and ruled lines made for a child's handwriting, and plenty of room. Everything for you (directions, question list, tracking) is on separate teacher pages. The 14 pictures are plain objects drawn for this set: leaf, acorn, pumpkin, turkey, tree and others. None has a face.
Three Levels, Marked By Dots
One dot: circle a picture and tell why. Two dots: the because pages, the vote pages and the partner page. Three dots: make your own question. The dots are the only level code, so children at one table are not comparing papers.
Cut, Ask, Vote, Write
Page 3 is a three-step Start Here. Cut the cards, read one aloud, and children vote on the Ask and Mark pages, circle a picture and give a reason, or ask a partner. The class graph shows what the group picked.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, every tally box, every writing line, the tracker, class grid, family note and home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The cards and the graph boxes are printed. Every page also prints clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
First, second and third grade teachers, special education and resource room teachers, interventionists, and families who want the same activity at home, with the tracking and home pages already made.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
An untimed Thanksgiving opinion activity with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed probe or a goal page, not a full writing curriculum, and not a claim about any student's grade level or rate of progress. There are no facts about the holiday's history in it: the questions are about everyday fall things.
