About this resource
A Thanksgiving write the room set for kindergarten, first and second grade: 20 picture-plus-word cards to cut and hang, and recording sheets from one box per letter up to a word and a sentence. Cut the cards apart, hang them around the room, and send children hunting. Each child finds a card, reads its number and writes the word. Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction, and room to write. Untimed: no clock, no score on the page.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (25 pages: 7 student pages, 4 cut pages, 14 for you)
- 20 picture-plus-word cards: turkey, pumpkin, corn, pie, acorn, leaf, apple, plate, fork, spoon, cup, bread, candle, basket, ship, heart, tree, sun, bowl and house. Each picture is one inch tall, drawn for this set (pages 6-7)
- The same 20 pictures with no word, for children who spell from the word bank (pages 8-9)
- 4 blank cards on each set to draw your own (8 in all)
- Cards sit edge to edge, 12 on the first page and 8 plus the blank cards on the second: three cuts across and two down on page 6, straight lines every time
- Letter Boxes: one box for every letter of the word, 93 boxes in all (2 pages)
- Word Line: write the word on a half-inch writing line, 20 words (2 pages)
- Word and Sentence: the card number, the word, and a sentence of the child's own, 10 sentences, with 4 sentence starters on each page (2 pages)
- My Word Bank: all 20 pictures with their words, and the four sentence starters (1 page)
- 1 answer key for all 20 cards, 1 tracker (6 rows, 50 items), 1 class grid, a team note, a home page where the family finds 5 things at home, a filled example (an invented student), a phrase and talk bank (16 starters), a binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label
- Start Here, a how-it-works page and a "What's next" back page
Built For The Child, Not The Office
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture, rounded boxes made for a child's handwriting, and plenty of room. Everything for you (directions, answer key, tracking) is on separate teacher pages. The pictures are plain objects with no faces and no clothing.
Three Levels, Marked By Dots
One dot: starting (a box for every letter). Two dots: building (the word on a line, the word bank). Three dots: ready for more (the word and a sentence). The dots are the only level code, so children at one table are not comparing papers.
Hang, Hunt, Record
Page 3 is a three-step Start Here: hang the cards, hunt and record, check it and send it home. Hand over a sheet and a pencil, and the child walks the room to find a card. Hang the cards at eye level in number order, or scatter them.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, every letter box, every writing line, the tracker, class grid, team note and home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The cards are always printed. Every page also prints clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten, first and second grade teachers, special education and resource room teachers, interventionists, and families who want the same activity at home, with the tracking and home pages already made.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
An untimed Thanksgiving word-hunt activity with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed fluency probe or a goal page, not a full spelling or writing curriculum, and not a claim about any student's grade level or rate of progress. There are no facts about the holiday's history in it: the words are everyday Thanksgiving objects.
